Steve has just informed me we have some wonderful Tree Heathers just arrived, Erica arborea. They grow to about 1.2 m tall and flower in the spring. Steve has just informed me we have some wonderful Tree Heathers just arrived, Erica arborea. They grow to about 1.2 m tall and flower in the spring.

In his regular blog and chatter with AboutMyArea/NN12 Ashley Warren owner of Towcester's Bell Plantation Garden Centre, said, "What a fantastic response we had last week selling our own fresh beef in the Farm shop, we sold nearly all the vac pack beef and some frozen. The majority of the comments were ‘what amazing flavour, we had forgotten what real beef tasted like’.

"I hope the great taste of the fresh meat encourages those of you who only like to buy fresh meat to try/buy the same meat frozen, we had half the animal back fresh vacuum packed and half flash frozen, there is plenty of frozen in the shop freezer for your consumption. There is not that much scientific evidence to say that frozen beef is better or worse than fresh. Its all about the speed at which the ice crystals form when freezing and how they thaw. Flash or fast freezing, freezes the moisture so fast in the meat cell wall does not rupture. Thawing should be done slowly in the fridge. That’s it for meat this week.

"While I am on the Farm Shop apparently we have the best selection of Gluten free product for miles.

"Steve has just informed me we have some wonderful Tree Heathers just arrived, Erica arborea. They grow to about 1.2 m tall and flower in the spring. Evergreen foliage with a profusion of white flowers, yellow new growth. Pretty useful plant that will grow in any soil. We have also got some smaller Erica carnea, Bell’s Extra Special, I guess that represents the whisky – coloured foliage rather than our wonderful establishment!

"We are now moving into some wonderful autumn colours, there are so many plants that can lighten the winter gloom. With the early autumn rain the ground is a little softer which makes planting easier. Some small Erica’s under planted with crocus, snowdrops or muscari will make a great feature in the spring.

"If you need your hanging baskets refreshing Judy will be more than happy to plant them up with pansies, viola, heathers, crocus, ivy and even fairy lights!

"We had 350 new Hybrid hens in this week, so there will be loads of different colours of hens to choose from. You could also choose what colour eggs you would like? Our quail at the moment are laying masses of eggs if you fancy some hard boiled quails eggs and celery salt while watching the Rugby world cup, they are at the till. Call Ducks, Bantams, Geese and Quail are all available.

"Due to the low cereal prices at the moment we have been able to reduce the price of some of our chicken feeds some by £1 per bag.

"Next Saturday 26th September Chris is doing a Poultry Talk here at the Garden Centre between 10.00 am – 11.00 am and its FREE, great if you want to know more about keeping chickens.

"This weekend (Saturday & Sunday) between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm the Shoe Cabin and Little Dress shop are having a redundant stock Sale on the Lawns in the Bell Plantation Courtyard. Products will be reduced to clear £2.00 – £10.00.

"Have a wonderful Rugby weekend with a bit of the great outdoors."
