Vulnerable and elderly receive shoebox donations for Christmas

Published: 6th January 2021 16:08

VULNERABLE and elderly Welsh residents looked after by an award-winning care company received shoeboxes of items donated by people in the community recently (December 2020).

Staff at Abacare in Newtown put out a call to the people of Wales for items those in their care need at this time of year and received lots of donations in response.

Jane Jones, Branch Manager at Abacare, which has offices in Newtown and provides care in the surrounding areas, said: “We have been running our shoebox appeal for five years now and it has got bigger and better every year. We received a staggering number of items, which we put together into boxes for our service users and we delivered them to those in need just before Christmas, so they had a parcel to open on the day.

“They are extremely grateful as many of the boxes contain items they’re unable to go out and get easily such as food items, hats, scarves, gloves, toiletries and more.

“The people of Wales have shown us how kind-hearted and generous they are and we can’t thank them enough.”

Abacare operates a professional Care Management Team that is committed to providing high quality care to individuals in their own homes.

The large team of trained, specialist, care workers provide positive based outcomes and person-centred care to people throughout the UK.

Due to the current pandemic, Abacare needs to boost its team numbers immediately, so it can continue to protect its service users and the NHS.

It is calling on anyone who is currently fit and healthy but unable to work, following business closures and restrictions, to sign up for a care role and to help in their own communities.

Abacare can offer full training and paid work immediately to anyone willing to become a professional home carer in Wales.

Jane added: “People who took part in our shoebox appeal are the types of caring, honest, reliable and good-natured people we want working for us. They have a natural affinity to care and we would encourage them to consider taking on a position in the industry with us or even just working a few hours per week to help an elderly person in their home.

“We provide a valuable service to the people of Wales and new staff are needed on a daily basis. No experience is necessary to become a carer as free, full training is offered, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial three months probationary period.

“New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for.

Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start by training with us and work their way up the career ladder gaining further training and qualifications.
