Christmas tree farm hosts open evenings in aid of charity

Published: 15th November 2019 15:45

FAMILIES are being invited to five free late-night open evenings at a Christmas tree farm in Somerset this December (2019) in aid of a children's charity.

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm is hosting the late-night openings on December 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 with entertainment from choirs and solo singers to raise money for Children's Hospice South West (CHSW).

Reg Hendy from Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm, which is based at Middle Hill Farm in Langford Budville, explained: "Coming to pick a Christmas tree in the evening is a magical experience for the family. We will be open until 8pm on December 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and will have some Christmassy entertainment for anyone who decides to visit us on these nights.

"The harmonious HOPE Choir will entertain our visitors on Monday, December 2 from 6.30pm. HOPE Choir is an NHS choir made up of staff from Musgrove Park Hospital working within the HOPE and Clinical Support directorate (HCS). The choir was set up around five years ago with the aim of bringing staff together for fun and for the love of music as well as to meet new people further afield within the directorate.

"On Tuesday, December 3 we will be joined by The Village Festival Choir from 6pm. They have been singing in local churches and for village events for many years. There are around fifteen people in the choir, who all live in the villages around Greenham and Ashbrittle.

"On Wednesday, December 4 The Ukes of Wellington will be visiting us and will be playing their ukuleles for visitors from 6pm. The entertainment will then continue with Wellington Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. They will be singing for us on Thursday, December 5 from 6pm. On Friday, December 6 we'll have the talented Allanå Chloe, who is a 19-year-old from Taunton, singing for attendees also from 6pm."

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm is hoping to collect as much money as possible on the evenings for CHSW. It will be offering mince pies and teas and coffees for a donation to the charity. Last year the Christmas tree farm managed to raise £3,662 for the organisation throughout December.

CHSW is currently the only provider of specialist hospice care for children in the region. It offers much needed support for youngsters with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition and their families at its three hospices: Charlton Farm in North Somerset, Little Bridge House in North Devon and Little Harbour in Cornwall.

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm, which is well-known for its home grown, freshly cut Christmas trees, is a 40-acre farm that is located close to the nature reserve Langford Heathfield, a mile outside of Langford Budville in Somerset.

It is a family-run farm, owned and run by Reg and his wife Ann and their two sons and daughters-in-law, Shaun, Trudy, Nick and Clare. The family has been growing and selling Christmas trees for more than 20 years.

Reg added: "Back in 1993, I took a risk and decided to diversify away from the traditional cash crops of wheat and potatoes, and chose to plant and farm Christmas trees. My next decision was what type of tree to go for. With dozens of potential firs and spruces available, I opted to specialise in the Nordman Fir variety, which was then, relatively rare and slow growing.

"The Nordman Fir provides one huge benefit to its main competition, the Norway Spruce, that is its needle retention. The soft fir needles of the Nordman Fir have even been known to remain green and still attached to the tree into May."

Since the early days, Reg has planted an increasing number of trees year-on-year and is now cultivating a much larger stock to meet public demand.

"As growers we pride ourselves on offering a quality, fresh product at a very competitive price. We can provide cut trees from three to 30 feet in size and have a superb array of low needle drop Nordman and Norway Spruce. We can also supply container grown trees, which have a much higher chance of surviving after Christmas and for future years if kept outdoors and cared for.

"Within our Christmas shop we offer a large selection of Christmas decorations to suit a range of festive themes from decorations that sparkle to Nordic and retro items. We also stock lights as well as fresh, handmade Christmas wreaths."

Langford Lakes Christmas Tree Farm is open every day from Saturday, November 16 at 10am until Monday, December 23. To view its full opening times, please visit www.langfordlakes.co.uk.

The late-night openings will take place on December 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Christmas tree farm will be open until 8pm on these evenings.
