Programme for Sherlock Holmes Fest's Three Cheers for Arthur Conan Doyle announced

Author: MattWingett Published: 22nd June 2018 11:01

 Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes

The stories, poems, sketches and performances that will mark Three Cheers for Arthur Conan Doyle - the opening night of Holmes Fest 2018 at the Square Tower on Wednesday 27th June have been announced.

This year, performances will reach from the Scottish Highlands via the Reichenbach Falls to ancient China. Along the way there will be ghost stories, a poem about Victorian zombies, a tale of a cross-dressing Holmesean villain, as well as a demonstration of Victorian marksmanship, a fortune teller and the fossilised remains of one of Arthur Conan Doyle's later obsessions - fairies.

When asked why Portsmouth should celebrate Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes' Fest's organiser, Matt Wingett says:

In late June 1882, Arthur Conan Doyle stepped off the steam packet from Plymouth and began his new life in Portsmouth. He created Sherlock Holmes while living in the town, as well as developing his lifelong fascination with ghosts and spiritualism. If anywhere should celebrate the life of Arthur Conan Doyle and his greatest creation, Sherlock Holmes, it's here. This is where it all started."

The variety of talent appearing at The Square Tower on Wedneday 27th is impressive, Matt Wingett adds.

"Internationally published authors, accomplished spoken word performers and musicians will make the night a varied and unusual affair. Add to that the short film that has been specially prepared for the evening, as well as the audience participation, then expect a joyous night. And there will even be a prize for the Best-Dressed Victorian, if you decide to come in costume."

The line-up includes authors and spoken word performers: William Sutton, Diana Bretherick, Jackson Davies, Christine Lawrence, Sue Harper, Clare Campbell-Collins, Vin Adams and Amanda Garrie. They will be joined by musicians Janet Ayers and Matt Parsons, and Gosport Steampunk Society's Stuart Markham.

Three Cheers for Arthur Conan Doyle is on Wednesday 27th June at The Square Tower. Tickets are £10 and are selling fast, so advanced purchase is recommended to make sure you get your seat.
