Staff get on their bikes and raise £1,500 for charity

TWENTY members of staff at a farm shop in Somerset cycled 20 miles last Sunday (May 21, 2017) and raised £1,500 in aid of its two charities of the year.

To tie in with Rumwell Farm Shop's 20th anniversary and to raise money for St. Margaret's Hospice and Escape Support Group, staff took part in the bike ride on Sunday, May 21.

Anne Mitchell, Joint Owner of the farm shop, which is located on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, said: "We wanted to do a team fundraiser for both the charities, which also linked in with our 20th anniversary and the bike ride seemed like a great idea and something that all the team could take part in.

"It went really well and some of the team even did the ride in fancy dress. Everyone finished the 20-miles but some of us are a bit stiff now. The route started and ended at the farm shop. We cycled to Hillfarrance, Oake and Halse and on to Ash Priors to Fitzhead and then headed home via Milverton and Nynehead.

"We had some keen cyclists in the group but others were beginners so we had a mixed bag but it was just great to see everyone so keen for the fundraiser.

"We're delighted to have raised £1,500 from the sponsored bike ride. This was split between St. Margaret's Hospice and Escape Support Group. We would like to say a huge ‘thank you' to everyone who donated."
St. Margaret's Hospice as a charity, has been at the heart of Somerset's community, for more than 37 years, delivering high quality, responsive and compassionate care to patients and their families facing a life-limiting illness.

Last year St. Margaret's Hospice, which is based in Bishops Hull, cared for more than 3,200 people across Somerset. To provide this care they need to raise in excess of £7.5 million. Without the generous support of the community, thousands of people facing the challenge of a life-limiting illness would struggle to receive the care and support they need.

Escape Support Group, which is based in Taunton, has been supporting families who have a child, or children, with disabilities or specific individual needs in the Somerset area for 17 years.

Escape's main aim is to provide fun activities, allowing children the opportunity to experience a positive childhood where they are integrated fully, and are able to share experiences that will enhance and enrich their lives, which other children and families may take for granted.

Escape offers support to families who have a child, or children, with any form of additional need or disability, no matter how mild or severe. A diagnosis is not required to become a member.

Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free range eggs at the gate.

Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased and the farm shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne's sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business.

Rumwell Farm Shop has a traditional butchery counter selling free range pork and Aberdeen Angus beef reared just four miles away on the family farm. There is also a delicatessen, bakery, jam kitchen and food hall.

Home grown potatoes are also still available, when in season, as well as everything from fruit, vegetables and groceries to plants, flowers, gifts and cards.

The Rumwell Cafe, which opened in May 2015, can seat approximately 80 people. The food prepared in the cafe kitchen is sourced from the farm shop, the Mitchell family farm and regional suppliers.

Families are welcome to the cafe and there is a menu especially for children. The cafe also serves afternoon teas, carvery on a Sunday and is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
