Yeo Valley donates £205 to Rage Against Rubbish

Published: 12th August 2019 14:59

A COMMUNITY litter picking group in Bridgwater recently (August, 2019) received a donation of £205 from a dairy company in the area.

Rage Against Rubbish organises monthly cleaning events along the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal and was given the money for equipment by Yeo Valley in Cannington.

Scott Hardwidge, Processing/Blending Team Manager at Yeo Valley, said: "I'm delighted that we were able to donate £205 to Rage Against Rubbish. I'm a keen angler and love the waterways in our area and I myself have picked up rubbish when out fishing.

"I came across the group on social media and thought it would be fantastic to nominate them to receive some of our Yeo Valley community funding, so I put them forward. I was keen to show my appreciation for all the good work they do clearing the rubbish from the canal and looking after the environment.

"At Yeo Valley we are very much part of the communities we work in and we want to support the causes that matter to our colleagues and customers. We have made money accessible to each of our sites across the south west, to help them in backing their local charities and communities throughout the year. I am so pleased that we could support Rage Against Rubbish so they can continue to host their monthly litter picks throughout the year."

Rage Against Rubbish was formed by Dan Perry, his nine-year-old son Riley, Jason Winter, Sarah Johnstone and Trev Vass, all kayakers, who regularly paddle along the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal. They were fed-up with seeing vast amounts of rubbish and discarded items in the waterway.

Rage Against Rubbish host litter picks once a month along the canal starting and finishing at the YMCA in Bridgwater. The Rage Against Rubbish crew are aided by volunteers and collect litter from the waterway and the towpath.

Jason from Rage Against Rubbish, explained: "We were overwhelmed to receive the donation from Yeo Valley. It was a lovely surprise and thanks to Scott for nominating us for the donation.

"We would like to purchase some safety equipment for our litter picking events such as high vis vests for our towpath volunteers and items in case anyone falls into the canal such as whistles and a thermal blanket. Safety is paramount for us as we can have between 30 and 50 volunteers at each litter pick."

Rage Against Rubbish is aided by the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal Inland Waterway Association (IWA) volunteers. The IWA volunteers provide a flat work boat with on-board rubbish, storage containers and they also dispose of the rubbish removed from the canal and towpath.

The YMCA in Bridgwater provide Rage Against Rubbish with canoes and kayaks free of charge to use on its litter picks and The Purplespoon Café at the YMCA also support the group by offering 10% off hot food and hot drinks on the day of each litter pick for volunteers.

The next Rage Against Rubbish Bridgwater & Taunton Canal litter pick will take place this Saturday, August 17 from 9.50am until 12.30pm from YMCA George Williams Centre on Friarn Avenue in Bridgwater.

Yeo Valley is the biggest organic brand in the UK, not only does the company care about the cows that produce its milk and the land they feed on, it also recycles approximately 95% of all its waste onsite and aims to improve this each year.
