BOB BOULTON from Taunton has recently (July, 2020) been appointed as Bread Bakery Manager at a family-run farm shop in the area.
The father-of-two will handle the day-to-day running of the new bakery and will manage the team members, as well as developing new ideas.
Anne Mitchell, Joint Owner of the farm shop, which is located on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, said: "We're delighted to welcome Bob to our team. He has 35 years' experience as a baker and, prior to his role with us, was a Manager of a bakery in the area for 11 years.
"He has also worked for award-winning bakers, Burns The Bread in Glastonbury, as well as Sainsbury's and E. Paul & Sons in Taunton."
Rumwell Farm Shop recently opened its new bakery department and can now bake fresh bread daily including white, wholemeal, multi grain and sourdough loaves.
Bob explained: "I was really excited about being involved with Rumwell's new bakery venture and helping to start it from scratch. It's great to be going back to basics on bread making with smaller volumes, rather than mass amounts with mixes.
"For our doughnuts, we are using a recipe from the 1930s and they have been very popular, whereas supermarkets would use a pre-mix. We prove our doughs slowly overnight to produce the best flavour out of them.
"It's been a long time since I have been in a bakery that has been built with a lot of thought about space and the future, rather than cramming things in and working in a tight environment. We have so much space it is unbelievable.
"I really enjoy playing around with flavours and making the old-fashioned shape loaves like cottage, plaits, Coburgs (cob loaf) and harvest loaves. I also like developing bread and rolls bespoke to a customer request or an idea."
The bakery also offers fresh soft baps for burgers and the finger rolls for sausages for summer barbecues. Bob also bakes crusty white French sticks.
Bob added: "As well as all the bread offerings our new bakery offers a full range of cakes and our popular doughnuts. We offer five varieties, which include custard, apple, salted caramel and jam with cream."
Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate.
Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the farm shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne's sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as daughters-in-law Sophie and Donna.
Rumwell Farm Shop has a traditional butchery counter selling free range pork and Aberdeen Angus beef reared just four miles away on the family farm. There is also a delicatessen, bakery, jam kitchen, food hall, wine cellar and gift room.
Home grown potatoes are also still available, when in season, as well as everything from fruit, vegetables and groceries to plants, flowers, gifts and cards.
