Learning from the Land serve up pizza at school

Published: 18th January 2011 08:50

Guided by local not-for-profit outfit, Learning from the Land, this is how local schools are bringing sustainability into the classrooms - or outside into the school grounds.

"Some of the most important work we do at Learning from the Land happens in local schools" explains director Nicky Saunter. "Our task is to help teachers put sustainability into their classes in a fun way and we find that MUD and PIZZA are great starting points. The students learn about materials, the principles of construction, where our food comes from, the effects of heat and fire and much more."

They are now working to roll this out across the county, so that teachers, pupils and schools can benefit from their experiences.

Learning From The Land was set up in January 2010 with EU funding from LARC (Local Action For Rural Communities) and runs Courses for the general public, Continuous Professional Development for the construction industry and Inset Days for schools.

So if you are looking to do something new in 2011, check our website for courses available locally - from repairing a cob wall to building a compost loo, from making sourdough to Growing Your Own Sunday Lunch, from rainwater harvesting to Training For Trainers.
