ISS Healthcare urges Welsh to spend time with elderly for Older People’s Day

Published: 18th September 2019 09:43

PEOPLE from Cardiff are being encouraged by a care provider in the area to celebrate and show support for Older People’s Day next month (October 1, 2019).

ISS Healthcare is urging people to spend quality time with elderly friends and family to help combat loneliness on Older People’s Day, which coincides with the UN International Day of Older Persons.

Neil Griffiths, Regional Manager at ISS Healthcare, which has offices at Springmeadow Business Park in Cardiff, said: “We think it’s super important that elderly folk are celebrated and shown that they are valued all year round, but we’re encouraging the good people of Wales to dedicate a whole day to doing so and show their appreciation on Older People’s Day by spending quality time with their elderly friends, family or neighbours.

“It can be something as simple as popping in for a cup of tea and a chat, or you could make a day of it and plan a trip. This could be anything from a stroll through a local park to a day out at a National Trust site or maybe a museum visit. You could even invite other older people from the community too.

“If you can’t get out and about then you could do activities at home such as baking, puzzles or board games.

“All too often we let life run away with us and before we know it, days, even weeks and months have passed since we’ve seen an elderly relative, friend or neighbour, so whatever you decide to do to show your elderly loved-one you care, it will certainly brighten up their day and make them feel extra special. It’s also a great way to combat loneliness as some older people don’t see friends or families for long periods of time and often have no social interaction with anyone.”

According to Dementia Action, 23% of the UK will be aged 65 and over by 2035. Older People’s Day exists and aims to challenge negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes and focuses on celebrating the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and the economy.

ISS Healthcare provides care support to thousands of people, with services commissioned through authorities in the area or purchased privately by individual service users or their families.

Its aim is to deliver care, which improves the lives of its service users and that treats them, and their families, with respect, dignity and compassion.

ISS Healthcare believes its services should not only comply with regulatory standards, but that it also delivers excellence and promote overall wellbeing.

Neil continued: We’re looking for kind, committed and carding individuals to care for our service users.

“Being a carer is a really satisfying job and gives people the opportunity to carve a career for themselves.

“Carers who join our team will be able to train to help to provide quality care for our older service users, enabling them to continue living fulfilling lives in the homes they know and love, or provide flexible, person-centred support at home or in the community for people of all ages with all kinds of physical or learning disabilities or mental health needs.

“We also have positions available in our complex care teams, providing bespoke care, sometimes around the clock, to enable people with complex needs to be supported in their own homes, and our reablement care team, who work with people to re-learn skills and rebuild confidence and independence after suffering illness or injury.

“We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week onboarding program in order for them to obtain a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full time and part time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation.”
