Hope for growing jobless comes from care sector with roles available now

Published: 15th October 2020 16:02

CARERS in Wales are urging anyone who has recently lost a people-focused job in the country to join them as their customer service skills are needed in the care world (October 2020).

ISS Healthcare says those losing positions at major high street retailers should join the homecare sector, as jobs in care can be roles until retirement for the right candidates.

Neil Griffiths, Regional Manager at ISS Healthcare, which has offices at Springmeadow Business Park in Cardiff, said: “High Street retailers in the UK during the last 12 months have cut jobs at the fastest rate ever since 2009, according to the CBI’s latest data. The most recent redundancies to be announced have been at restaurant chain, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, with others to potentially come from clothing chain, Peacocks.

“Decline was felt across all retail sectors, with only groceries, furniture and carpets, and ‘non-store’/other goods seeing growth. Clothing has been heavily hit on the High Street, as well as the hospitality industry elsewhere. We’re going through prolonged economic uncertainty and more job losses are anticipated by many of the economic experts.

“There will also be many more people likely to be facing redundancies after the Chancellor’s statement that support will be offered only to those whose employers feel there is a role for them, rather than placing them on furlough.

“With more local lockdowns likely this could put businesses unable to trade properly in a very difficult position, making them unlikely to be able to keep staff on.”

Alpesh Paleja, lead economist at the CBI, has said in the media that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has been effective at insulating workers in some of the worst-hit sectors, but that job losses had simply been delayed rather than avoided.

“The CBI’s latest survey shows trading conditions for the retail sector remain tough. Firms are worried about dwindling household incomes and the risk of further local lockdowns.

“But we’re able to give hope to anyone worried about their job prospects and financial future, as we need more staff all the time.

“Those who have worked in other sectors where they have interfaced with the general public tend to be empathetic, caring, patience and able to listen. These are just the skills we need in care in the county right now.

“We know many people are worried that what they’ve learnt in one certain industry means they’re restricted when it comes to seeking new employment, but we want to let them know that this simply isn’t true.

“Shop workers tend to have brilliant interpersonal skills. They know how to interact successfully with customers and understand how to treat people with respect. Those who have excelled in their roles are friendly and helpful, which is ideal when visiting the homes of our service users.

“Retail workers have also often been asked to take care of till takings and locking-up at the end of each day, so they are trustworthy individuals. They would have completed stock checks and other admin tasks showing they are organised too. To maintain a role in retail, punctuality and reliability would have been key as well. These are all attributes that can be transferred to our sector.

“We wish to provide the right candidates with job security within the care industry and those that have the right skills and aptitude can have a job for life with us. We want to utilise the skills and knowledge they already have, as well as offer them more training within our sector.”

ISS Healthcare provides care support to thousands of people, with services commissioned through authorities in the area or purchased privately by individual service users or their families.

Its aim is to deliver care, which improves the lives of its service users and that treats them, and their families, with respect, dignity and compassion.

ISS Healthcare believes its services should not only comply with regulatory standards, but that it also delivers excellence and promote overall wellbeing.

It offers flexible and supported work for kind, committed and reliable people, who have excellent communication skills and a genuine care for others.

Neil and his team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in the care industry and would like to find out more.

“Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start at the very bottom and work their way up with training and qualifications.

“We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for.

“No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is provided. We offer new recruits a five-day training induction and a 12-week on-boarding programme working towards a care certificate. We also offer flexible working hours, both full and part-time, as well as competitive wages and generous holiday allocation. It is a great opportunity for people to achieve a recognised qualification.”

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to a national staff discount scheme for many major brands, such as online and in-store retailers, including Tesco, Primark and Argos. It also covers holidays and electrical goods.
