Wessex supports South Wales Armed Forces Day

AN EVENT taking place in Cardiff next month (June, 2015) to celebrate the men and women who make up the armed forces community has received support from a business in the city.
Wessex Garages on Hadfield Road is one of the principal sponsors for the second year running for the South Wales Armed Forces Day, which takes place on June 27 at Coopers Field in Bute Park.
Gareth Howells, General Manager at the dealership, explained: “We are incredibly proud to be one of the principle sponsors again for the South Wales Armed Forces Day.
“The day is a great chance for us to show our gratitude and support to the men and women who make, and have made, such a huge contribution on behalf of our country. The spectacular military displays and activities will also make the day a fantastic family day out.
“This year we have also sponsored The Welsh Horse Yeomanry. They will demonstrate the considerable heritage and history of The Welsh Horse Yeomanry and will be paying tribute to their significant role in the First World War.
“The Welsh Horse Yeomanry will present CADFARCH - Welsh War Horse - a re-enactment showing the initial commandeering of civilian horses by the Army in the early days of the First World War, and then training them for their new military duties.
“1st, The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (The Welsh Cavalry) was formed in 1958 when the King’s Dragoon Guards and The Queen’s Bays were amalgamated. The Welsh Horse has adapted its display of Cavalry Through the Ages to depict the history and uniforms of the two regiments from the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685 to the First World War.”
Today’s Welsh Horse commemorates historical military events, but celebrates the fact that horses are no longer used and sacrificed in conflicts.
The aim of Armed Forces Day South Wales is to raise awareness of the contribution made by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
It also gives people an opportunity to show their support to the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving personnel, to service families, veterans and cadets.
Colonel Phil Hubbard, Chairman of the Armed Forces Day South Wales Committee, said: “Armed Forces Day South Wales has become an important annual event which has grown with Armed Forces’, veterans’ and their families’ involvement and the support and attendance of the general public.
“I would like to thank Wessex Garages for its support once again and to everyone who has helped make it possible.
“As part of the event we will be commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the Welsh Guards, the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and World War II VE Day.
“Around these iconic dates will be woven the story of our Armed Forces, past and present, so come along, have a great day out, enjoy the show and show your support.”
During the Armed Forces Day in Cardiff there will be the Sea Cadet Field Gun Crew race.
Colonel Phil added: “This is an exciting arena event, which has grown in popularity year on year. Training Ship Cardiff will this year pit its strength and skill against TS Collingwood in Hampshire and the cadets have been training hard to make sure that honours stay at home.”
Nineteen youngsters between the ages of 10 and 17 pull a gun and limber heavier than a mini car in the race.
Colonel Phil continued: “In fact the gun has a proud history. It fired in anger in the Boer War when the Royal Navy’s gun competition was founded, and then eventually made its way to Cardiff where it is still in action with the Sea Cadets.
“The Field Gun competition goes back to the Boer War when HMS Powerful and Terrible were tasked with providing gun crews to help lift the sieges at Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafeking.
“The Sea Cadet Field Gun Crew race is a combination of team work, skill, speed, strength and determination. The gun has no brakes and has to be brought to a dead stop from breakneck speed in a trice.”
The Armed Forces Day flag will be raised on Cardiff’s Castle Keep at 11am on Monday, June 22, marking the start of a week of events. The following day the Armed Forces Day golf tournament will be held at Cotterell Park in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Armed Forces Day South Wales will be held in both Cardiff Castle and Coopers Field, Bute Park, Cardiff on Saturday, June 27. The day will start at 11am with a parade through Cardiff City centre from and back to the castle. A Drum Head service will follow in the Castle grounds.
