Self-storage units: your questions answered

Published: 5th March 2020 12:02

There are many reasons why you might want to use a self-storage unit. From moving to a new house to making more space in your existing home, choosing a self-storage unit can be the ideal solution. Many businesses also regularly use self-storage units for stock or to free up office space on a temporary or semi-permanent basis. So how should you go about finding a self-storage unit that’s right for you?

Why do I need self-storage?

Sometimes, self-storage can be used as an extension of our already over-crowded homes. In the modern world, we all seem to be living in smaller houses and flats, or sharing them with more people while acquiring an increasing number of possessions at the same time. Studies show that, on average, we own six times as many things as the previous generation.

From children’s toys to spare beds, clothes, books and records, there are many things that we may no longer need from day to day but don’t want to get rid of. We may also want to use self-storage temporarily when moving house, gradually downsizing, or just to clear out a spare room for when a family member comes to stay. Your reasons for choosing self-storage will affect the type of facility you need.

Is there self-storage in my area?

There are approximately 1500 different self-storage facilities in the UK, so the chances of finding one nearby are pretty good, especially if you live in a major city like London. Commonly, people say “I didn’t know there was self-storage near me,” but chances are there’s a discreet facility within a short driving distance. Storage companies often keep a low physical profile for security reasons, so it’s understandable if you didn’t realise a building or industrial estate you pass every day on your way to work actually contains a multitude of self-storage units.

How much space do I need?

Storage units come in a wide variety of sizes, everything from 10 to 700 square feet, depending on the facility. Obviously, you’ll pay more for a bigger unit, but if you only need a small amount of space, prices are often surprisingly low. For just a few items, it’s usually pretty easy to figure out how much space you’ll need, but it’s more difficult if you need to clear a whole house. The contents of a typical two-bedroom home will require about 100 square feet of storage space.

How do I prepare my items for storage?

Use appropriate packing materials and sturdy boxes that will hold the weight of the items within. Take extra care over fragile items. Label each box clearly and also number it so that it can be checked off against your inventory. Prepare your items properly, for instance by removing batteries, draining off any liquid, cleaning and defrosting them. Leather goods should be treated with a special conditioner before putting them into storage.

How should I store my items?

Stack furniture against the walls. Place heavy items on the floor and lighter items on top. Make sure the labels are all facing outwards. Store items you know you’ll want access to nearer to the door.

Self-storage is a great solution to many of life’s problems. Why not look into finding a storage unit near you today?
