‘Swim the Challenge'

Published: 4th February 2008 11:17
Make a splash and take part in a swimathon at Burntwood Leisure Centre from 17th to 20th April.

Burntwood Leisure Centre is inviting Lichfield and Burntwood swimmers to put on their swim suits, collect some sponsorship money and start training for Swimathon 2008.

A SwimmerThis year's national Swimathon is aiming to get over 19,000 people to ‘Swim the Challenge' at 600 pools nationwide, to raise money to support the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation.

Paul Watson, Manager of Burntwood Leisure Centre, said: "We hope lots of people from across the district will take part in the Swimathon at Burntwood Leisure Centre. It will be lots of fun and a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to have a go at a healthy swimming challenge, whilst raising money for a great cause."

Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE, who has supported Swimathon since it began 21 years ago, said: "Swimming is a great overall workout. It uses every muscle group in the body whilst burning more calories than other activities, such as running, and is one of the government's targeted sports to reduce obesity. Swimathon is not only a great form of exercise for all, but a great team activity for friends, families and colleagues."

Swimathon offers a range of challenges to suit all swimmers depending on age, ability and personal goals. You can swim independently or as part of a team by joining one of the set Distance Challenges. Or, you can swim a distance of your choice, when you want with the SimplySwim Challenge. If you are part of a team at work, why not join the Corporate Challenge with up to four of your colleagues?
