Local children celebrate Christmas with Sutton Coldfield care home residents

Author: Lauren S Published: 21st December 2023 15:03
A care home in Sutton Coldfield was joined by a local nursery to help kick-start the Christmas festivities.

Residents from Care UK's Bishops Manor, on Jockey Road, had a visit from the children at Little Ripley's Nursery to help spread the festive cheer.

Children and residents donned their best Christmas jumpers, and everyone gathered around the Christmas tree to sing classic Christmas carols and watch the home officially turn on their Christmas lights.

Later, residents helped the children get creative with some Christmas crafts, including decorating festive cupcakes and cookies and making Christmas cards to share with the residents.

Commenting on the visit, resident Barbara Preece, aged 97, said: "I enjoyed baking cookies and listening to the children talking about their favourite part of Christmas Day. One little boy told me being allowed to eat chocolate for breakfast is his favourite part of the day.

"I've been so fortunate to have had many wonderful Christmas' and I'm looking forward to this one and seeing the children again next year!"

Thomas Bampfiled, General Manager at Bishops Manor, said: "We're feeling really festive here at Bishops Manor, and having the children pop in for a visit was a wonderful surprise for residents.

"Intergenerational relationships have proven to be enriching for both young and older people, as they provide an opportunity for the different generations to learn from each other. Particularly at this special time of year, its wonderful for traditions such as carolling around a Christmas tree, to be passed on to the next generation.

"It was brilliant to see beautiful friendships forming between residents and children from Little Ripley's Nursery - we look forward to seeing the children again very soon."

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Bishops Manor, which remains open to potential residents, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been designed to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
