A jubilant crowd celebrated the Cobblers second goal of the afternoon. Their first goal had hit the net as many supporters were still settling into their seats after only a minute of play. The ever popular Adebayo Akinfenwa tapped in a cross from Emyr Huws at short range, having played a part in the earlier build up to the goal. An element of luck helped the Cobblers to a two goal lead minutes later with Cheltenham's Billy Jones putting the ball past his own keeper whilst trying to deal with a Ben Tozer throw in.
Cheltenham's Darren Carter then touched in a cross from Chris Zebroski as the visitors began to find some shape and confidence. They were rewarded again only three minutes later as Zebroski rose above the defence to head home from a corner making the score 2-2. Shell shocked Northampton continued to battle away til half-time but Cheltenham's earlier heroic efforts had clearly rattled them.
The second half saw Akinfenwa valiantly battling on, being denied from a shot that hit the crossbar and a header in close succession. Cheltenham however were equal to the challenge and looked to take control of a scrappy period of play. Substitute Darryl Duffy then secured the points for the visitors by beating Cobblers' keeper Lee Nicholls with a low shot to his right with just ten minutes remaining in the game. A late flurry of activity from Northampton proved fruitless and Cheltenham left Sixfields with a deserved three points.
