Your Guide to Exploring Suffolk

Published: 18th October 2021 15:14

Suffolk is one of the most popular locations for a UK staycation and it’s easy to see why. From breath-taking coastline to chic market towns and miles of forests and nature reserves making up much of the rest of the county, this is a truly idyllic spot for your next holiday. Here’s the best of what Suffolk has to offer.

Where to stay

Suffolk has something to suit every staycation budget; for self-catered accommodation there are charming Suffolk holiday cottages set in picturesque Constable Country, along with versatile camping options if you want to get even closer to the great outdoors. You’ll also find five-star hotels in towns such as Southwold or Aldeburgh along with country estate stays too.

Exploring the coast

The Suffolk coastline stretches 65 miles from Felixstowe to Lowestoft and includes sandy beaches, picture-perfect towns and spectacular scenery too. Some of the highlights include:

·       Southwold – holidaymakers love visiting the sandy beach at Southwold, along with their pick of fine seafood restaurants and a brewery tour of Adnams. The Southwold Pier is a must and is packed full of vintage arcade games.

·       Aldeburgh – this has an artsy vibe to it, thanks to the Aldeburgh Festival founded by Benjamin Britten. The town is also famous for its fishing roots and visitors will love buying the daily catch from the huts on the beachfront.

·       Dunwich Heath - this is a National Trust natural reserve filled with heather, sand dunes and heathland. Take a walk here and you might spot red deer, seal or even porpoises swimming off the coast.

Constable Country

The artist John Constable was born in the Stour Valley in 1776 and spent his life painting the local surroundings he was so inspired by. Any art enthusiast will love visiting the Dedham Vale to spot the original locations of his work, whilst being amazed by the natural beauty of the area. There are many ways to explore Constable Country, including walking holidays, biking and even taking a Dedham Vale boat ride.

Town Trips

There’s a reason that many Suffolk towns are used as the base for film or TV sets – you couldn’t imagine a more sublime location than Lavenham which is considered to be the best-preserved medieval village in the UK, and one of Suffolk’s most important wool towns.

Bury St Edmunds is a thriving market town, attracting shoppers and diners who visit the Michelin star restaurant of Pea Porridge.

Family Adventures

Suffolk really does cater for every type of staycationer, whether you’re holidaying solo, as part of a couple or with friends. For families, the opportunities for entertainment are endless, with Centerparcs at Elveden Forest, Go Ape at Brandon, Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park on the outskirts of Ipswich and Framlingham Castle.

It’s not too early to start planning your holiday to Suffolk for 2022. Accommodation gets booked up quickly, along with tickets for popular attractions. Book soon to avoid disappointment.
