Clare Castle Archaeological Excavation, Morning of Day 3
Day 3 of the Clare Castle dig has dawned drier and brighter than yesterday with lots of new volunteers and others carrying on from yesterday. Thanks to the kind support of ‘Clare Antiques and Interiors’ (just next to the castle) we now have on-site wifi access and so are looking forward to posting updates and photos throughout the day – relaying volunteers’ experiences, ideas and discoveries as they occur!
This morning, Trench D are planning the medieval wall which is still covered by the late medieval demolition rubble prior to picking off the rubble to see how much of the wall foundations remain intact underneath. Meanwhile in Trench B, all hands are on deck to remove the half-metre-deep layer of railway ballast to expose the medieval layers below. They will certainly appreciate their coffee break in half an hour’s time!
