Colin’s Sudbury Cricket Column, Week 23, Brilliant Batch breaks Godmanchester
A stunning 96 ball 109 from skipper Darren Batch propelled Sudbury Cricket Club back up to join the elite of East Anglian Cricket in the East Anglian Premier League. On a glorious early autumn day (after a pretty winter like week) in front of a huge crowd estimated to be around 300, Sudbury confirmed their elevation with a comprehensive 144 run victory over Cambridgeshire League champions Godmanchester.
A racing start from 2015’s in form batsman Nathan Poole (37) and Tom Huggins (26) was slowed when the pair of them together with vice-captain Adam Mansfield were dismissed in short order but a brilliantly paced partnership of 158 between Batch and Akeal Hoseain (66) put the Talbots in command of the game and their innings closed just short of 300 for the loss of 9 wickets. It was pretty spectacular stuff as the home side hit 15 maximums including 6 each for the two main protagonists.
This was always going to be a tough ask and after early wickets for Billy Moulton Day (and what a season he’s had!) and Ben Reece Sudbury’s spin twins Huggins and Hosein throttled the life out of Godmanchesters innings taking 8 for 65 between them in just under 20 overs leaving the away side a long way short, bowled out with nearly a quarter of their overs unused.
So “job done” for the Talbots premier team, however, unfortunately the Two Counties league decided it would be 3 up two down for all of the leagues so Sudbury Saturday 3rd X1 will be relegated to league 7 not as previously anticipated.
The column hopes to interview coach Tom Huggins to get his take on both his own record breaking and Sudbury’s season so look out for that. Should be very interesting.
