Speakers

Marcus Beresford, Lord Decies is related to both the Marshal and his wife.  In his researches into the life of Marshal Beresford he has come upon new information about the Convention of Cintra.  His talk is entitled: ‘The Convention of Cintra – was it a win/win for everyone?’.

Alistair Robertson is the non executive Chairman of the Fladgate Partnership, which includes the ancient Port shippers of Taylors, Croft and Fonseca. He will speak about Sir John Croft’s undercover work in the Peninsular War and his relief work in the area devastated by the withdrawal of the Napoleonic Army from the  Lines of Torres Vedras.

Sir Bernard de Hoghton is a lateral descendant of Major General Daniel Hoghton and the current head of the de Hoghton family. He will speak about Daniel’s life and career.

Dr Peter Booker was Exhibitioner at Pembroke College Cambridge where he studied Modern History. Following his career with the British Coal Corporation, he now lives in the Algarve and devotes his time to researching Portuguese and Algarvean history. He will speak about the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance.

Lesser Known Results of the Peninsular War in Portugal

The battles have been fought and studied and the war has moved away from Portugal.  Large swathes of the country have been devastated especially in the centre, following the defence of the lines of Torres Vedras. Many misunderstandings remain unresolved.

Why Hedingham Castle? But that is the birthplace of Daniel Hoghton who is buried in the Cemetery in Elvas.

The cost will be £90.00 which covers attendance at the lectures, dinner 15th October and Lunch 16th October at Hedingham Castle.

For those coming from afar a rate for Bed and Breakfast at the Mill Hotel in Sudbury has been negotiated at £69.00 for a single room with full English breakfast and £85.00 for a double or twin room with breakfast.

For those staying at the hotel, a bus will be arranged to transport them to and from Hedingham on 15th October, so that they can properly enjoy the dinner. This will be charged separately.
Numbers are limited to 50.
