Gainsborough’s Musical Friends, Sudbury, 5th - 9th November
Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, in collaboration with The Suffolk Villages Festival have organised three events for this week. To celebrate Gainsborough and his circle of musical friends, two talks and a concert have been organised to coincide with our current exhibition at Gainsborough’s House, Karl Friedrich Abel, Composer and Impresario.
Beginning this Wednesday at 7pm for 7.30pm, Director of Suffolk Villages Festival, Peter Holman, will give a talk at Gainsborough’s House on ‘Gainsborough’s Musical Friends’.
This talk is free but booking is essential via Gainsborough’s House 01787 372958
On Sunday 9th November at 4.30pm, a second talk on ‘Gainsborough’s Musical Friends’ will be given by Director of Gainsborough’s House, Mark Bills, here at the House. A concert will follow at 6pm in Sudbury’s St Peter’s Church.
Again, this talk is free of charge but your booking must be made using the box office number for the National Centre for Early Music 01904 651485
The concert, directed by Peter Holman, will be performed by Philippa Hyde soprano, Mark Caudle bass viol and the Essex Baroque Orchestra. It explores music composed by Gainsborough’s friends, particularly as heard at the famous Bach-Abel Concerts in London. It includes a symphony and songs by J C Bach, Mozart’s Symphony no. 1 (written in London at the age of eight), and music by Abel, including gamba solos, a reconstruction of a gamba concerto and the beautiful aria ‘Frena le belle lagrime’ for soprano, gamba and strings.
Tickets for the concert will be £18 (reserved) and £12 (unreserved) with half-price tickets for anyone in full-time education.

St Peter’s Church is a few minutes walk from Gainsborough’s House, in the centre of Sudbury.
The Abel exhibition will continue until 11 January 2015.
