Scything for beginners, Assington Mill, Sudbury, 7th June

Scything is a "green" way of cutting grass, nettles, brambles, and paths between borders and allotments, without the use of heavy machinery and fossil fuel.  In a recent competition, our previous tutor, Beth, using a scythe mowed more than a person using a strimmer, in a given time.

Book now via this link:

You will be learning scything using an Austrian scythe provided by the tutor, Chris Riley.  If you have a scythe at home, please bring it along (whatever kind it is) and Chris will be able to give advice about its use.  Please wear closed toe shoes (i.e. no sandals) and long trousers (we might be scything nettles).  Please dress appropriately for the weather (i.e. if it's a sunny day, bring a hat).  All equipment and safety equipment will be provided by Chris, but you can buy your own scythe from him on the day.  Please let me know if you are bringing an Austrian scythe, as we can then take more people on the course.

You will learn:

- The various uses of the scythe
- Parts of the scythe
- How to set up the scythe to fit your height
- 'Body-friendly' mowing technique
- How to sharpen the scythe safely
- How to peen the scythe (peening is cold forging the scythe to draw the metal into a sharper point - essentially hitting it with a hammer...)

We will be scything outdoors most of the day, and this will involved twisting and moving the back.

If you would like to buy a complete set of parts for an Austrian scythe from Chris on the day, please bring cash or a cheque book.
