Assington Mill, Sudbury, Suffolk, Picture-framing - practical introduction, 20th February 2016

Tutor: Glyn Jones
Cost:  £120 inc. home-made lunch, biscuits & cakes. Materials will be £20 to be paid in cash on the day.

During the day you will be taken through the whole process of planning and designing the picture. How to cut the mountboard, oak picture frame and glass and assembling the picture to conservation standards.

The day will consist of a number of demonstrations of each stage of the framing process.  Participants will be invited to take part in each demonstration, using each tool in turn and gaining hands on experience of using the equipment.

In this introductory course you will be provided with a framing kit consisting of a ready-made oak frame, mountboard, glass and backing board to assemble your own 6inch by 8inch photograph (please note this is the only size that can be accommodated on this course) If you would like a more in-depth and individually run course where you can produce your own kit for any size photo or artwork please speak to the tutor.

Picture-framing is something that you can do at home for yourself, friends and maybe for paying customers.
Please book early as places are limited.

The planning stage (part A):  measurement, size and dimensions
The planning stage (part B):  the esoteric - ambiance, style, colour and mood

  • Know the key elements of a framed picture
  • How to cut the mount, using specialized tools, for the mounting of a picture
  • Accurately cutting the four sections of the picture frame moulding
  • Joining the moulding sections to create the frame
  • Basic ways of attached a picture to the mount
  • How to cut glass to your required size
  • Cutting and fitting the backing board and assembling the framed picture
  • Sealing the back of the picture with tape and adding a hanging cord

You also find out about (and use) the specialist tools of the trade.  This means that, if you decide to purchase your own kit, you will do so knowing that it won't stay in the box, unused for long!

Really good presentation.  I liked the demonstration and then all of us having a go at each technique.  The handouts are excellent.  I'm thrilled with my finished framed photo.

Superb.  I'm delighted I've learned how to frame properly.  I think your set-up here is absolutely brillian and beautiful, and breaking for lunch on site is marvellous.  Lovely to meet you and Bob, and I shall return!

The leader's presentation was very clear and we all had hands-on practice of each stage in the process.  The handouts provided were detailed and helpful.  Warm welcome and excellent lunch.  Thank you.

Brownies very good!!  Many thanks, Peter
