Checkatrade and Suffolk Trading Standards Open Day, 10th June

Checkatrade and Suffolk Trading Standards are joining forces to host an Open Day on Friday 10th June 2016. Tradespeople are invited to discuss what the partnership can do for them and their business with the expert panel.

Taking place at Ipswich Football Club, the day will begin at 12:30pm with refreshments before Councillor Sarah Stamp from Suffolk County Council will welcome everyone to the event and explain the aims of the Open Day.

Next up, Checkatrade founder Kevin Byrne will take to the stage to discuss the company’s partnership with Suffolk Trading Standards. Passionate about giving consumers peace of mind and promoting reputable tradespeople, Checkatrade have formed partnerships with Trading Standards Authorities across the country.

Also in attendance will be Checkatrade ambassador and celebrity DIY expert Craig Phillips, who is also committed to the cause of building up trust in consumers and encouraging more tradespeople to join the service.

Today over 850,000 individuals every month use Checkatrade to find the right trade for them. These trades have to go through 18 considerations, 14 of these being checks before they are able to join Checkatrade. If the member in one of their partnered Trading Standards areas these can increase up to a total of 25 considerations.

Kevin Byrne commented: “Our members are subject to rigorous background checks by Trading Standards, including information that is freely available to the public as well as confidential and restricted information that is supplied by external organisations such as other public authorities and the police.

“It is pretty unprecedented for a commercial company to put so much power in the hands of a Local Enforcement Authority, but it is all part of our mission to give consumers peace of mind. We’ve currently got partnerships with 25 more Local Authorities in the pipeline and it is our goal to cover the whole of the UK.”

Suffolk County Council Trading Standards was the first to partner with Checkatrade four years ago, and this event will further raise awareness about the partnership in the region. After the presentations, there will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A sessions so attendees can have all their queries answered.

Councillor Sarah Stamp, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said:“I am delighted that Suffolk Trading Standards and Checkatrade have built up such a strong and well-established partnership, working together to ensure that Suffolk is Rogue Free.

“The Open Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this partnership and for Suffolk businesses and organisations to find out what they can do for them.

“The impact of rogue traders’ actions can far outweigh any financial loss to the victim, with dramatic effects on quality of life and confidence not to mention the detrimental effect to those businesses operating properly.

“Having a trader directory that our residents can trust is vital in the fight against rogue traders.”
