 Lavenham Carnival

Lavenham Carnival & Rare Breeds Classic Car Show, 31st August 2016

The main Lavenham Carnival day is on 31st August (Bank Holiday Monday). The day commences with a procession that leaves the Market Place at 12 noon and leads the crowds to the Carnival/Recreation grounds, on Bridge Street Road.

This year we are hosting a 1940’s theme, so the procession will include floats carrying people dressed as war time evacuees, the home guard, the armed forces, land girls and the civil defence force. The floats will be joined by the Diamond Majorettes, the Ragroof Players and a number of classic cars and period military vehicles.

On display at the Recreation Ground and positioned on the cricket pitch, will be The Lavenham Press Rare Breeds Motor Show. This is made up of between 400 to 500 vintage and rare breed cars. The Football pitch will house a period fun fair, a beer and tea tent, numerous craft, charity and food stalls, a children’s activities tent and of course the main arena, in which various acts and displays will be performed.

Fun workshops, games and face painting will be available throughout the day in the Childrens activities tent. Additionally, The Bureau of Silly ideas will be hosting a sideshow of amusements, including the shirt or squirt static cycle race and the performing menagerie plant pot. You can find out more about BOSI at www.bureauofsillyideas.com

Amongst the stalls there will be an information and display stall run by the 8th in the East and The Swan Hotel of Lavenham. The stall will display World War II memorabilia and artefacts, and give information on the Airmen’s bar signatures project which seeks to trace families connected with the airmen who frequented the Swan bar in the 1940’s whilst posted at local airbases, such as those from the  487th bombardment group.

Local businesses, including Number Ten Wine Bar and Kitchen, The Swan Hotel, The Great House, Lavenham Butchers, Sparling and Faiers Bakery,  My Kitchen Your Place, the Good Food Army and Cafe Nini will be supporting the day by managing food and beverage stalls. Other sponsors include The Lavenham Press, The Lavenham Parish Council, Sworders, Project Orange and local residents of Lavenham. Our thanks for their support in making the carnival day a possibility.

On display in the main arena:

    •    The Ragroof Players will be hosting a tea dance in the main arena at the recreation ground. The Ragroof Players Tea Dances are a fantastic participatory event, featuring authentic vintage music from the 1920’s to the 1950s, glamourous costumes, glorious dance displays and unique instant dance classes in a number of popular dance rhythms. You can find out more about them at www.ragroofplayers.co.uk   and you can also follow them on twitter @ragroof or on facebook

    •    We will also be joined by the magnificent comic acrobat, Abigail Collins, who’ll be interacting with the crowds during the procession, performing her amazing Une Femme Exposee show in the main arena and hosting a hula-hoop workshop in the afternoon. Abigail’s show is a mix of deft physical clowning, earthy humour, acrobatics, hula-hooping, and ballet on shoes made from traffic- cones! Read more about Abi’s work and profile at www.abigailcollins.moonfruit.com .

    •    The Ipswich Diamond Majorettes will be leading the procession and performing a display in the arena (in 1940’s dress and to 1940’s music).

    •    The Skyliner Band will be performing and underscoring many of the arena events. The Skyliner Band is the resident band of the 95th Bomb Group at Horham. They are an eight piece band specialising in 1940’s music and come authentically dressed in 8th Army USAAF enlisted men’s uniforms. The Skyliner band will surely make the Carnival go with a swing.

    •    Hounds from the Suffolk Hunt, Suffolk hunt will be bringing their hounds, who will be on display throughout the afternoon and will also join us in the arena.

Join the celebrations by following the procession to the recreation grounds, where you can participate in a tea dance, learn to hula-hoop or just sit back and watch the acts.

Admission to the Carnival grounds is £5 per adult, 15 and under gain free admission. Entrance programmes will be sold in advance at Number Ten Wine Bar and Kitchen, Lavenham Butchers, Sparling and Faiers Bakery and The Lavenham British Legion. They will also available at the gates on the day.

Why not join us by dressing up in 1940’s outfits? There will be competitions on the day for best dressed children and adults so don’t be shy!

Additional parking fields will be available at the common (where Water Street joins the Brent Eleigh Road) The Rectory (opposite the Church on Church Street),  and the meadow on Frogs Hall Road.

A free bus service will be provided from car parks on The Brent Eleigh Road and Frogs Hall Road to transport you to the Recreation Grounds.

The Carnival Dance

On Saturday 29th August, the Lavenham Carnival will also host a dance in the Marquee at the Recreation ground. Steering away from the 40’s for one night only, The JDs (& The Sometimes Band) will be playing a multitude of great and classic songs from the last 40 plus years. They've got something for everyone to swing their pants and rock their socks off to! You can follow the JDs on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thejdslive . Number Ten Wine Bar and Kitchen will be managing the bar and Lavenham Butchers will be managing food sales. Tickets are £7 in advance from the venues listed above, and £10 on the door. Doors open from 19.30.
