 Quay

Summer School, Quay, Sudbury, 24th - 29th July 2017

A chance to learn and refine performance skills in acting, movement and music through classes, workshops and performance.

We have increased the age range and will allow 16 year olds to attend. We are also repeating the experiment from the last two years of increasing the number of performances from one to two, so the Summer School will run an extra, but shorter, day on the Saturday.

CLASSES

There will be a number of general acting and movement classes to develop more awareness of:
• General acting techniques, body language and gesture
• The dynamic range of the voice
• Creating a character and learning improvisation techniques
• Stage discipline and creativity and working as a team.

WORKSHOPS

In addition to the general classes, there will be a series of 75 minute workshops concentrating on specific aspects of theatre performance. Students can choose to participate in up to FOUR of these disciplines.

The workshop titles are:
•

Dance and Sound Effects – Taught initially in two separate groups, the elements of dance and sound effects will be combined in the second half of the workshop to produce a scene of sights and sounds.
• Working with Props – Playing games and creating scenes using a seemingly ordinary selection of props and objects!
• Directing – Sit in the Director’s chair and make decisions about staging and interpreting a scene!
• Musical Theatre – A chance to develop your skills as a singer, actor and dancer all rolled into one!
• Characters in Masks – By focussing on movement and body language, we will use masks to bring your characters to life.
• Improvised Comedy – Learn the basics and then build up your improvising skills with games, songs and even improvised raps!
• Creating Characters – Through voice, physicality and more – discover comic characters inside yourself that you never realized existed before!
• Period Movement – Learn how to move in regal fashion, then use your courtly bearing to create a period dance.

2016 was a year of many royal celebrations – the longest reign, the Queen’s 90th birthday and so forth, so for the 2017 show we will be looking at the monarchy through the ages in a show entitled A RIGHT ROYAL SHOW – a show which will be dramatic, satirical, comic and bizarre! Expect appearances from Henry V111 (and perhaps a few wives), Queen Victoria and members of the present royal family!

This year there will be TWO performances and they will take place on the Friday and Saturday at 6.00pm on the Quay Theatre stage. All the students will be involved in the performance and have opportunities to sing, dance and act. Tickets for the show will be on sale for £ 6.00 Adult and £4.00 Child, each.

It should be noted that this is a workshop performance – not a finished product – and aims to demonstrate the skills learnt during the week.

HOW TO BOOK

Anyone wishing to book a place should fill in the booking form obtainable from the Box Office and return it with the full fee as soon as possible. On the Booking Form you are asked to choose your top SIX choices using the numbers 1 – 6. 1 will indicate your first choice, down to 6 indicating your 6h choice.

We will do our best to ensure that your four workshops fall within your top six choices.
Participants will be sent a letter confirming their place and providing further details about the course and the performance. Parents will then be able to book tickets for the two performances.

We also plan to produce a DVD of the performance and in the letter we will be asking your permission to let this happen. Once the DVD has been produced, we will be offering copies on sale to parents.

It is important that participants attend every day, including the Saturday.

Facilities for eating a packed lunch will be provided. Students should bring this with them. The Quay Theatre has its own sweets, ice cream, fruit juice and canned drinks counter in the foyer. Students may purchase items from this at break times.

The children will have a “cast” party after the show on the Saturday, so children should be collected at 9.00pm on that evening.
