Newmarket vs. Lambourn in the Trainers Commentary Competition, 23rd September 2017
This year's Trainers Commentary Competition, being held in aid of the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend beneficiaries on Saturday, 23rd September, will have a new format as Team Newmarket takes on Team Lambourn.
Six Trainers will take to the commentary position at Newmarket's Rowley Mile in a bid to successfully call home their designated race. However, the real race will be who can raise the most for the very worthy causes supported by the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend; Racing Welfare, the Newmarket Day Centre and Newmarket Academy.
Jamie Osborne, Joe Tuite and Brendan Powell will represent the Valley of the Racehorse as Team Lambourn and Amy Murphy, Richard Spencer and Mark Tompkins will represent the home team as Team Newmarket. The top fundraiser will not only be awarded the Julian Wilson Memorial Trophy, they will also win a Christmas Party Package for their team as well as a selection of goodies from NAF.
Sara Cumani, Chairman, 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend, said;
"The Trainers Commentary Competition has really turned into a fantastic annual occasion and we are very pleased to welcome the new format of teams from the different training centres this year. We were also very keen to introduce an incentive which would benefit the Trainer and their team, therefore we hope the prize of a Christmas Party package will help each yard back their respective boss.
"The coming together of these six trainers will no doubt create a bit of healthy competition which in turn will hopefully help to raise as much money as possible.
"I would like to thank the Trainers for their time and commitment to the competition in support of the beneficiaries for the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend - may the best man or woman win!"
Trainers will be allocated the race that they will be commentating on via a live draw, accessible via Facebook Live, ahead of racing at Newmarket's Adnams July Course on Saturday. A special guest, to be announced in due course, will commentate on the spare race remaining but will have no effect on the competition between the Trainers.

About the Trainers
Team Newmarket
Amy Murphy
At 25, Amy Murphy is the youngest participant in the Trainers Commentary Competition. Come the day of the competition, she will also just be celebrating a first successful year as a trainer having acquired her license last autumn.
Having completed a course at Hartpury in Horse Management Amy then went on and worked for some of the top trainers around the world including Tom Dascombe, Gai Waterhouse and most recently Luce Cumani. After three years as Assistant Trainer to Cumani, Amy then joined the training ranks herself and has got off to flying first season, already recording 12 winners on both the Flat and Jumps.
Not only experienced in his first season as a trainer, Amy has also ridden under rules as an amateur jockey too.
Mark Tompkins
Mark Tompkins is a Classic winning Trainer who has long passed the 1000 winners mark since joining the training ranks.
Having won a total of 19 top Grade and Group contests over both the Flat and Jumps, Mark won his first Group race very early in his career and has maintained this standard ever since. He is brilliant at getting the best out of every horse and puts his heart and soul into finding the right opportunities for them to perform at their peak. His handling of his Classic-winning St Leger Group 1 horse, Bob's Return, is a perfect example of this.
Mark is chairman of the Newmarket Trainers' Federation and has been since 1997, and he is also a trustee of the Racing Centre. He is highly respected for his common sense and passion for all racing matters.
Richard Spencer
Richard Spencer has worked in racing for the last 10 years, with his first position at Peter Bowen's in west Wales. He moved to Barry Hills in 2006 and continued as pupil assistant with Charlie Hills. At the end of 2012 Richard moved from Lambourn to Newmarket and spent two years as assistant to Michael Bell at Fitzroy House. Richard joined Rebel Racing at Albert House Stables at the end of 2015 and took up the position of Trainer when his licence was awarded at the end of March 2016.
Richard is not only a talented trainer, having already achieved a Royal Ascot winner, he is also an accomplished race rider, having ridden 25 winners in Point-to-Point races. He also rode under rules as an amateur, with notable wins in a Hunter Chase at Ascot in 2014 and the Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown in 2012.
Team Lambourn
Jamie Osborne
Jamie Osborne began his successful career as a Jump Jockey at 18, starting off with National Hunt Champion Trainer Nicky Henderson before becoming stable Jockey to Oliver Sherwood. Having achieved just shy of 1000 winners, 65 at Grade level, highlights include riding 12 Cheltenham Festival winners in total, five of which he rode in the 1992 event.
Retiring due to an ongoing injury in 1999, he joined the training ranks in 2000, setting up shop in Upper Lambourn. Jamie has enjoyed a number of big race wins on the Flat as a trainer including multiple Royal Ascot victories as well as the UAE Derby in 2014 with stable star Toast of New York.
Joe Tuite
From an Irish dairy farming family, Joe came to England in 1984 and quickly gained experience riding under rules as a conditional jockey to Stan Mellor and Jenny Pitman. His talents as a rider and all-round complete horseman also extend to every aspect of pre-training, breaking and educating young horses.
Joe Tuite entered the training ranks in 2010 after eight years as assistant trainer to top Flat handler Mick Channon, having previously worked in a similar capacity for Charles Egerton. He trains from a purpose built yard in Lambourn, near to Hungerford.
From training 6 winners in season one (2011) Joe more than doubled this tally the next year, training 13 winners in his second season. He enjoyed his biggest victories in 2014 when Litigant won both the Betfred Ebor Handicap at York and the Betfred November Handicap at Doncaster.
Brendan Powell
Brendan rode over 800 winners as a Jockey, both domestically and abroad. Alongside winning the 1988 Grand National aboard Rhyme N Reason, he also has two Scottish and two Midlands National's to his name, plus several Cheltenham Festival winners during his distinguished career.
When he retired in 2000, Brendan originally set up training in Winchester with only a handful of horses. Now, 17 years later and a move to Lambourn in 2006, he has trained in excess of 750 winners and holds a dual-purpose licence. His training career has been very successful to date, not least with the stable star Dark Emerald who won two races in Dubai and was runner up in a Group 2.
About the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend Beneficiaries
Racing Welfare are working tirelessly to provide additional higher quality and supervised accommodation to support young people at the start of their careers within the horseracing industry. A designated fund has been set up in order to raise money for a Newmarket Housing Project and we are pleased to confirm that we donated £28,554 to this fund following last year's event.
The Newmarket Day Centre is an independent community resource which exists to offer support to elderly people in the community. The Day Centre currently have an ongoing project to renovate part of the centre which when finished, will ensure the building is running to maximum efficiency, saving on bills as well as providing the best environment for its customers.
The Newmarket Academy's Social Mobility Fund is the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend's new beneficiary for 2017. 30% of the students at the Academy face real challenges growing up with family poverty. As a school, Newmarket Academy is meeting their educational needs but the students often miss out on other educational opportunities which could raise their ambition and aspiration, and thus help to address the national issue of social mobility.
