Anglea Rippon, Sir Roger Tomkys, and Chris Bushby receive Honorary Awards at UCS graduation ceremonies

Over 400 graduating University Campus Suffolk (UCS) students based at UCS Ipswich, UCS Otley and UCS at Suffolk New College celebrated their hard earned achievements with family and friends during the second day of graduation ceremonies held at the Ipswich Town Hall and Corn Exchange today.

During the first ceremony of the day, students from the School of Business, Leadership and Management were presented with their awards by Sir Roger Tomkys - a retired British diplomat, and former Master of Pembroke College, at the University of Cambridge.

Addressing the graduating cohort he said, “I would particularly like to congratulate all of today’s graduates. They after all, have worked for the honour they are about to receive.”

During his time with the Foreign Service, Sir Roger was posted in Jordan, Libya, Athens and Rome before appointments as Ambassador to Bahrain and to Syria and High Commissioner in Kenya.

“The graduates today are going out into a pretty hard environment and it is very warming to hear the account of the great strides that are being made at this institution and of the developing reputation of UCS for placing its students as well as for educating them.”

Nursing and Midwifery students received their awards during the afternoon ceremony where journalist, newsreader, writer and television presenter Angela Rippon received an Honorary Degree Award for her work as Vice President of the Patients Association and as ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society.

“I am so very proud to be associated with this university through this doctorate, one that in its six years has grown in stature and respect, where whole departments are now valued for the excellence of their academic principles and the quality of their courses.”

She concluded with one piece of advice for the graduating cohort. “I hope that for each and every one of you, you will accept exactly what life has to offer. That you will seize every twist and turn as a challenge, an opportunity to explore new horizons, to discover even more about yourselves, about your ambitions and your true capabilities.”

The final ceremony of the day saw students based at UCS Otley and UCS at Suffolk New College receive their degree awards. An Honorary Award was also presented to Chris Bushby, Executive Director of the Suffolk Agricultural Association, Chair of Suffolk New Academy Governing Body and Presiding Fellow at Suffolk New College.

He said, “To you the gradates, congratulations to you all on gaining your degree's today. I know you would have worked hard for this achievement in this life journey of education.”

Head of Higher Education at UCS Otley, Denis McAuley said, "Occasions like this make me feel incredibly proud to work in education and I would like to wish all of our graduates the very best of luck as they continue on their journeys."

Hundreds more graduates will recive their awards in the final day of ceremonies tomorrow. UCS will also recognise three other extraordinary individuals for achievements within their field, including Frank Bright, an inspirational speaker and survivor of Auschwitz, Paralympic bronze medallist Zoe Newson, and Ipswich Town footballing legend Mick Mills.
