Don't become a statistic this summer

The school holidays are in full swing, which have so far delivered autumnal temperatures, torrential downpours and flash floods.

However, when the weather picks up, the region's ambulance service is urging people to take practical steps to avoid a 999 call.

Over the last two summers, the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) received 135 calls to drownings or near drownings.

The service also received 177 calls related to patients suffering from heat exposure in the summers of 2015 and 2016.
People are being urged to take the following steps to avoid becoming a statistic.

  • Keep well hydrated
  • Wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours and relatives during the hot weather
  • If you plan to swim in the sea, go to a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags
  • When you enter the water, take time to acclimatise to the temperature and make sure someone is watching you
  • Know the tides to avoid being cut off by the sea

Dave Allen, an Area Clinical Lead for EEAST, said: "There's plenty of things for families to do this summer. However, a call for an emergency ambulance is not on anyone's summer to-do list.

Some sensible and practical steps will prevent a 999 call by staying safe in the water and taking measures to avoid heat stroke or sunburn.

"We will always be there for the most seriously ill or injured patients. However, if your medical ailment is not an emergency, NHS 111 is available 24/7 to offer health advice."
