Royal Humane Society, Long Service and Good Conduct Awards

Police and staff were recognised for their good work and dedication at an awards ceremony held at Suffolk Police Headquarters in Martlesham on Wednesday 12 September.

The ceremony saw Royal Humane Society Awards handed out alongside long service and good conduct medals. Attendees included Robert Rous, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, and Suffolk's Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore.

Staff and officers were given Long Service Awards, with recognition of service of up to 40 years.

Chief Constable Wilson also handed out Certificates of Merit.

Among those recognised were police officers and members of the public who were awarded Royal Humane Society Awards medals, testimonials and certificates for acts of bravery in the saving of human life and for effecting successful resuscitations.

Corporal Joseph Lovell saved the life of a man who was stabbed in Ipswich. In April last year Cpl. Lovell was in a kebab shop when he saw a man being stabbed. He realised that the victim was bleeding profusely from injuries sustained to his neck and face. He took hold of the victim and brought him back into the kebab shop, plugging the wound to prevent further bleeding. Despite the victim trying to push him away, Cpl. Lovell persisted in trying to apply further pressure to the wound. Eventually paramedics arrived and took over.

Other members of the public to be recognised included Lisa Barrell and Kate Mason who prevented a woman from jumping or falling from a bridge on the A14.

Police officers were also among Royale Humitarian Award winners. The first to collect their awards were PC Philip Burton, PC Glenn Perkins and PC Shane Stout. The officers saved the life of a man who had attempted suicide.

Sgt David Horne, PC Samuel Dines, PC Andy Smith and PC Christopher Squirell were also recognised for their efforts in attempting to save the life of a man who had committed suicide.

The quick actions of PC Elisabeth Harper and PC Alex Vinter saw them recognised after they prevented a woman who attempted to jump from a bridge into the river in Ipswich.

PC Jonathan Harvey was recognised for his efforts after he jumped into the water at Ipswich waterfront to help a woman. He took a life belt with him to help her stay afloat and took her to a nearby access ladder and got her out of the water with help from another on-duty police officer.

Chief Constable Gareth Wilson said: "The ceremony was an opportunity for our award winners to be recognised for the very important role they have played in policing our communities.

"I would like to give my personal thanks to all the medal and award recipients for the valuable contribution that each and every one of them makes to the policing of this county."

PCC Tim Passmore added: "These award presentation evenings are a real cause for celebration. It's very important that we publicly acknowledge the commitment of officers, staff and volunteers in this way.

"As PCC, and on behalf of the whole county, I'd like to congratulate all recipients and thank them for what they have done, and continue to do, to protect us.

"Their dedication and compassion is way above the call of duty and that's why Suffolk is such a great, and safe, county."
