Do you know how well your child can see?
Summer is here and the kids are off school; but do you know how well your child can see?
Please don't fall into the trap of assuming your child can see perfectly well just because he or she hasn't said anything to the contrary. Maybe your little one has never seen very well so doesn't know what good vision looks like? Maybe one eye is weaker than the other which, if treated, could be improved.
Also don't assume that your child's vision and eyes are checked thoroughly at school. Even in those schools which do carry out an eye check, it is only a very basic check of vision and not a full eye examination. I recommend that all children have a fully comprehensive eye examination prior to starting school so before age 5.
Poor vision as a result of uncorrected refractive error can mean the difference between a child enjoying school or dreading it; passing examinations with flying colours or just scraping a pass; fulfilling career aspirations or just making do. Poor eyesight can also contribute towards poor behaviour in class.
All children under the age of 16 are entitled to an annual eye examination funded by the NHS. Those between the ages of 16 and 19 and still in full time education are entitled to an eye test every two years. Children are also entitled to an NHS voucher to help with the cost of glasses should they be needed.
Modern children's spectacle frames can be functional and funky - and indeed for many can be viewed as a fashion statement. Contact lenses are also available for children and are ideal for sports or activities when glasses are not suitable. Sports goggles can also be made with prescription lenses which are an alternative for certain activities including swimming.
To learn to the best of their ability, all children deserve the very best vision possible, and this will only happen as a result of regular eye examinations.
So before your child goes to school or back to school for a new term - don't forget to book a sight test!
