Can you donate £10 to support your local Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre on 25th September and help them double their funding?

Author: Lindsey Gardner Published: 12th September 2012 14:41

Localgiving.com is a social enterprise owned by the Community Foundation Network (CFN) and the Ardbrack Foundation, both registered charities dedicated to supporting local charities.  Their mission is to enable philanthropic giving to small local charities and community groups in the UK.

They are awarding a fantastic £500,000 worth of match funding to local charities which are registered on their website against donations received from 25th September.  The scheme is being promoted as 'Grow your Tenner' as they are pledging to match fund up to £10 on each donation made until their funding pots runs out. But donors must move quickly if they want to help as they ran a similar scheme in March with a funding pot of £375,000 which was allocated in just 30 hours!

Sutton & Croydon Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, based in Coulsdon, is one of the charities validated and registered on the Localgiving site that is now hoping to take advatage of this fantastic opportunity to raise additional funds.  The SCMSTC is a self-help, self-funded charity offering sjupport and a range of physical therapies to MS sufferers from across South London and Surrey.  Funded over 20 years ago, the Centre helps people with MS by providing exercise classes and therapies in a fun and friendly environment.  Historically, the Centre has relied on donations and internal fundraising, as it receives no external funding from the government or local health authorities.  However, after the recent financially challenging years the country has experienced, the Centre has fallen on hard times.  As Centre Manager, Brenda Hemstead comments:

"Sadly we are predicted to make a serious loss by the end of this financial year, and with rising running costs and a reduction in income, our financial reserves will be exhausted within the next three years, which could see our Centre close in 2015".

Schemes such as Localgiving's 'Grow your Tenner' are therefore vital in helping to raise awareness of the services the Centre offers the local community and to attract much needed external funding to ultimately secure its future.

If you can help by donating up to £10, please go to www.localgiving.com/scmstc on Tuesday 25th September to make an online donation which will be match funded penny for penny up to £10.
