Anna Fitzpatrick has won the AEGON GB Pro-Series singles title in Sunderland following a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Samantha Murray at the Puma Tennis Centre.
The 21 year old from Sheffield, who was seeded third in Sunderland, made the perfect start in the final as she confidently secured the opening set in 33 minutes.
However Murray, who had reached the final without dropping a set, fought back in a second set lasting 28 minutes. The 23 year-old from Cheshire levelled the match before racing into a 3-0 lead in the deciding set.
Fitzpatrick was not to be perturbed though and mounted a comeback of her own to lead 4-3. The match then went with serve until Fitzpatrick gained the all important break of serve in game 12 to win the title after 1 hour and 51 minutes.
After the match Fitzpatrick praised her opponent's performance and also said:
It has been a very good week for me as I also won the doubles with Amanda Elliott.
It is my second ITF Pro-Circuit title and I am now looking forward to going to Loughborough for next week's AEGON GB Pro-Series event where I can hopefully keep up the momentum."
Both players can be pleased with their performances this week; Murray came through qualifying to reach the final without dropping a set whilst Fitzpatrick beat a player ranked 130 places higher in the world rankings, top seed Justyna Jegiolka in the semi-finals and also claimed the doubles title on Saturday.
