Remembrance Sunday in Rugby

The Annual Remembrance Service & Parade In Rugby.

The annual Remembrance Service and Parade will take place at the War Memorial Gates in Hillmorton Road on Sunday 13 November 2011.

The Mayor, Civic Party and guests will walk from the rear of Lesley Souter House, Whitehall Road, to the Memorial Gates to participate in the service and parade.

Some 20 contingents will be taking part, including the Royal British Legion, ex-service organisations, the Territorial Army, Cadet units, civil and voluntary organisations, Scouts, Guides, Girls' Brigade and Boys' Brigade.

The units will assemble in Hillmorton Road between the Recreation Ground and Temple Street to be reviewed by the Mayor at 10.30am before they march on parade in front of the Memorial Gates. The service and parade will last from 10.50am to about 11.20am and members of the public are most welcome.

During the service there will be a two minutes' silence and the laying of wreaths at the Memorial Gates by the Mayor and the units on parade. Any member of the public may also lay a wreath. The service will be followed by a march past of all those on parade. The music for the service will be provided by the Salvation Army Band.

The Service will be taken by the Rector of Rugby, the Reverend Mark Beach, assisted by Reverend Alan Thomas. The Salutation will be given by Mr Harry Walker of Rugby No. 1 Branch of the British Legion. The Response will be read by Cadet Andrew Howes, 29F (Rugby) Squadron Air Training Corps.

For the duration of the Service and parade, traffic diversions will be controlled by the Police. Hillmorton Road (from Temple Street to Moultrie Road) and Whitehall Road will be closed to traffic from 9.45am to about 11.20am. Traffic for the Ken Marriott Leisure centre will be directed to the Leisure Centre access road (Bruce Williams Way) by using Moultrie Road and/or Hillmorton Road (from the town centre side). Vehicles to and from the Leisure Centre will be halted by Police for the two minutes' silence.

Armistice Day

Rugby Borough Council is supporting the Royal British Legion in the tradition of a two-minute silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in memory of those who gave their lives for their country.

Maroons will be fired to mark the beginning and end of the silence - 11am and 11.02am - on Armistice Day, Friday 11 November, at Rugby Recreation Ground, Hillmorton Road. The sound can be heard over a three-mile radius.

The Mayor will attend and representatives from the local branches of the Royal British Legion, other ex-services organisations and other organisations which participate in the Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade have been invited. The event is open to the public.
