Ofsted Commends Rugby Children's Centre

A Children's Centre in Rugby has been praised by government inspectors for its approach to helping local families access information and support.

Ofsted visited Claremont Children's Centre on Claremont Road in July 2012 to make an assessment of the services on offer to families with under-fives who use the centre.

This was the first inspection for the centre which was judged by Ofsted to be satisfactory overall, with a good capacity for sustained improvement, and outstanding care, guidance and support for families in need.

Despite a ‘satisfactory' grading, inspectors identified a number of key strengths in the centre's operation. Ofsted also highlighted the efforts of centre manager Alison Irvine who with her ‘excellent knowledge of the local community', has made significant improvements to the range and quality of provision since coming to post 18 months ago.

They cited ‘good quality services for parents as well as children' which are ‘supported by very strong partnership working'.  Although services were rated high, inspectors recognised that more time is needed to review the impact of the improvements made.

The report also praised the centre's well developed governance arrangements through both an advisory board, and the local authority who ‘support and monitor the work of the centre'. However it did suggest more challenging targets were needed to help the centre reach more vulnerable families.

Most notable was Ofsted's acknowledgement of how well families engage with the centre. They pointed out the ‘very welcoming inclusive environment' and ‘well regarded staff'. Feedback from the parents gathered through the inspection was positive with many coming to the centre on word of mouth recommendation. The report noted that ‘many families say that the centre has been responsible for helping them to make major improvements in their lives'.

Claremont Children's Centre Manager Alison Irvine said: "I am very pleased with the report which reflects the ethos of the centre and the high quality services on offer. The comments made by Ofsted prove that we have the foundations laid to become a good, or outstanding centre for families in the future.

"Whilst our families are happy and they get the support they need, we do recognise that we need to do more to make sure things stay this way. We take on board the recommendations of the report to work harder with our partners to set clear targets and develop processes to monitor our performance.

"This will help us ensure we continue to do all we can to give the very best start to young children in our local community. We are all fully committed to making these improvements."
