After admitting that the secret to concealing her growing bump was a pair of Spanx maternity pants, the pregnant Britain's Got Talent judge has caused a mixed reaction from experts...
Sharing her secrets on how she cleverly managed to hide her growing six months pregnant belly from onlookers, mum-to-be Amanda Holden has admitted that it was a combination of clever layering, strategically placed handbags - and a little help from maternity pants from Spanx, reports the Daily Mail.
"No one guessed!" Amanda revealed at the weekend. "I was waiting for someone to write a piece saying that I'd eaten a few too many mince pies over Christmas, but Spanx served me well!"
However, her admission hasn't gone down well with experts at the Royal College of Midwives, who felt that pregnant Amanda Holden shouldn't be wearing ‘control' pants as it could be harmful to her unborn baby.
Despite Amanda backing up her baby bump concealing tactics by saying, "No one needs to worry - I checked with my lovely doctors who said my baby wouldn't be harmed," Janet Fyle from the Royal College of Midwives disagrees.
"The uterus has an increased blood supply during pregnancy and it is therefore important that that blood flow into and out of the uterus is not restricted," Janet said. Amanda's comments have also caused divided opinions from mums on internet forums, too.
However, the Spanx pants in the spotlight aren't control pants like the standard pairs on sale. The Mama Spanx tights and Power Mama ‘shaper' pants are designed to support the mum-to-be's bump, thighs and bottom - not flatten it in any way.
We spoke to the people behind the maternity Spanx pants to find out exactly what they should be worn for...
"Maternity Spanx are really about supporting you baby bump and your back whilst also reducing the rear and thighs rather than slimming a bump," Fiona Prentice from Intimates Lingerie told us. "The idea is that they grow with you through your pregnancy to provide support throughout. It is very important for pregnant women to wear the maternity Spanx rather than regular Spanx as there is no compression in the bump area."
Amanda isn't the first celebrity to talk about her love of the Mama Spanx ‘shaper' pants. X Factor judge Dannii Minogue admitted to wearing them when pregnant with her son Ethan to firm up her bottom when wearing glam, tight fitting dresses. And celeb mum-of-two Tess Daly also revealed that she wore them to help support her baby bump when she was pregnant with her second daughter Amber.
