Twelve motorists caught speeding through road works

Twelve motorists were caught speeding through road works on the A46 at Clifford Bridge on Thursday morning, November 11th, during a short operation to improve road worker safety.

Eleven, whose speeds ranged from 65 to 79 mph, received £60 fixed penalty notices but the twelfth, who was driving at 80mph, will be summonsed to appear at magistrates' court in due course.

Officers from the Warwickshire Police Operations Task Force and members of the force road safety unit planned yesterday's operation in conjunction with the Highways Agency, which had raised concerns about the number of motorists ignoring the temporary 50 mph speed limit.

Weather conditions cut the operation short for safety reasons but Inspector Adrian Davis said that it had been worthwhile.

"Warwickshire Police is committed to protecting all road users from harm and that includes those people who are working on them as well as driving along them.

"There is a temporary speed limit of 50mph on that road for a very good reason - to make drivers slow down and reduce the risk of harm to the construction workers as well as themselves and other motorists.

"Unfortunately many of them ignore the speed limit and the fact that so many were caught during such a short period of time shows how bad the problem is and how little concern many motorists have for the safety of road workers and other road users.

"Speed is one of the top four causes of death and serious injury on the roads and we will continue to address this issue through education and enforcement.

"We offer speed awareness courses to drivers who are driving just over the speed limit in the hope that will give them a better understanding of the dangers they present. Unfortunately those we stopped on Thursday were going far too fast and had to face the penalties.

"I am very pleased with the success of the operation and know that the construction workers welcomed our attendance. We will do this again here and in other locations to show drivers that we will not tolerate them putting themselves and other road users at risk."
