More Automotive Apprentices Sought In Warwickshire
The Leader of Warwickshire County Council has welcomed a recruitment drive to increase the numbers of apprentices in the automotive industry.
BMW has recently announced plans for a new intake of apprentices at the Hams Hall plant in Coleshill, North Warwickshire - and the county has also revealed a 61 per cent rise over two years of the number of apprentices joining businesses.
Warwickshire County Council visited the car manufacturer in the run up to the launch of its £3.5 million Going for Growth initiative. As part of the programme, a total of £237,000 funding has been earmarked to establish a virtual Apprenticeship Hub to create 300 business apprenticeships, and a further £1.2 million will fund a county council apprenticeship programme.
In a letter to BMW bosses, Council Leader Cllr Alan Farnell said: "The plant is significant to the global supply chain and a credit to Warwickshire and its economy, and the news of the recruitment to the apprenticeship scheme is very much welcome.
"This is a huge boost to the automotive manufacturing industry and, importantly, the local economy, and another example of why the county council's growth agenda is significant."
BMW Group is looking for over 150 new recruits to take up apprenticeships at its different locations across the UK. Eight apprenticeship places will be based at the Hams Hall engine manufacturing facility where 31 young people are already progressing through apprenticeship training programmes.
The county council is also boosting the numbers of apprentices in the automotive industry as County Fleet Maintenance took on four new apprentices to its workshops in September.
Cllr Farnell added: "Investing in young people is necessary for the long-term future, and this is a key theme of the forthcoming Warwickshire Expo, to be held in March, which has been organised as part of the Going for Growth programme.
"BMW's recruitment drive shows confidence in the local economy and serves as a positive story for UK PLC."
