Ironing out heritage at Kidwelly

Kidwelly town in Carmarthenshire was once the base of a thriving industrial community including a tin works, a brick works and coal mining. But Iron is the theme in the town this summer 2010 as Ironstone: An outdoor Exhibition of International Cast Iron Art is taking place at Kidwelly Castle from May - September 2010 hosted by Sculpture Cymru in partnership with Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government's historic environment service.

The sculpture exhibition forms part of the 6th International Conference of Contemporary Cast Iron Art which takes place at Kidwelly Industrial Museum, 7th - 11th July 2010.  Curated by Wilfred Cass, owner of Goodwood Sculpture Park, the exhibition includes work by 15 sculptors and development of cast iron and sculpture in Wales.

KidwellyOverlooking the River Gwendraeth, Kidwelly Castle is a remarkably well preserved castle, a chronicle in stone of the evolution of medieval military architecture. Its building spans four centuries, from its beginnings as a simple stockade put up by the Normans in 1106 to a powerful concentric ‘walls within walls' fortress. But its most striking feature is the soaring twin-towered great gatehouse, completed in 1422 as Kidwelly's chief strong point, which still stands almost to its full height.

John Wallis, Cadw's Site Operations Manager, said, "Cadw is delighted to be able to work in partnership with the Sixth International Conference of Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Sculpture Cymru to host the exhibition of cast iron sculpture, Ironstone, at Kidwelly Castle.

"Monuments like Kidwelly Castle inspire the creativity of artists and craftsmen.

We are delighted to host the sculpture exhibition for 2010. The castle is the perfect backdrop for showcasing imaginative pieces of art."
