Welsh carers proud to be in it for the long run

Published: 21st September 2020 10:25

A WALES home care provider says its carers are proud to be in a job for life as a recent report reveals 20% of home care workers in the country have been in their role for more than a decade (September 2020).

The report, by Social Care Wales, also found that 44% of the workforce have been in their current role for more than two years.

Neil Griffiths, Regional Manager at Abacare, which provides care across Wales, said: “Our carers are very proud to work in an industry where their job is for life. We have many that have been with us for two, three, five and even 10 plus years.

“The recent report from Social Care Wales challenges the perception about retention in the social care sector.

“Many people often see a job in care as a stepping stone to something else, but we back the report as care really can be a job for life.

“The demand for carers in Wales will not fall and our profession represents one of the few jobs for life left in the country. As a nation we have an ageing population that wishes to remain living at home and, that the authorities realise, are emotionally and physically better off at home. This means the care sector is rapidly expanding, as people need care in their old age, so there will always be jobs available in home care.

“We hope after the publicity of carers during the COVID-19 pandemic, people now have a better understanding of care and see it as a highly skilled, professional, vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society. Carers deserve admiration and respect. With a job for life like this, people can start at the very bottom and work their way up and we will offer them full training and access to industry-leading qualifications.”

As of June 1, 2020, there were 19,637 domiciliary care workers on the Register of Social Care Workers in Wales.

Neil added: “The report also found that 64% of domiciliary care workers have an appropriate qualification, while most of the remainder of the workforce are working towards one.

“We provide our free, full training on a fast-track basis to make sure everyone we take on is ready. This includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial three months probationary period. The Government has also taken steps to ensure a quicker turnaround on DBS checks, so people can get into work quicker.

“According to the HR industry magazine, Personnel Today, retailers in the UK cut jobs at the fastest rate since 2009 during the past 12 months. Its survey of 128 businesses, including 63 retailers, forecasts worse to come in the year to September. It also revealed decline was felt across all retail sectors.

“Many people believe that the skills they’ve learnt in a certain industry means they’re restricted when it comes to seeking new employment, but we want to let them know that this simply isn’t true as many of the skills they already have can be adapted for a brand new industry, such as care.

“People who work in retail for example have excellent customer service skills and know how to treat customers with respect and they are super helpful and friendly, and these are just some of the skills that our carers need when visiting our service user’s homes. Being trustworthy, organised, punctual and reliable as well as being able to undertake admin tasks are some great skills that are transferrable between industries.

“We are offering the right candidates secure employment in the care industry, which can often mean a job for life. They’ll be able to bring all the experience they’ve acquired into the industry as well as gain much more through training.”
