Chance for new parents to get back to work thanks to returners’ programme

Published: 17th November 2020 09:46

AN AWARD-WINNING home care provider in Wales has launched an initiative this month (November 2020) to help parents return to work after having their children.

Abacare, which provides care to people in their own homes across Wales, wants to encourage full-time parents back into the workplace with its new returners’ programme.

Neil Griffiths, Regional Manager at Abacare, said: “We appreciate that it’s not easy for parents returning to work after having children, so, as part of our recruitment process, we are setting up a returners’ programme, not just for mums, but for dads too, to help normalise the hiring of those returning to work after having children.

“Lots of potentially excellent candidates for the roles we have to offer in care do not feel confident enough to apply for our jobs. There are potentially hundreds, or thousands, of people in Wales wishing to return to work after bringing their children up who would not normally contact us about our vacancies, because they are worried about the process of applying and how they will be viewed.

“We’re hoping that by having a specific, returners’ programme they will be encouraged to apply. Anyone who has taken time out can lack confidence, as they haven’t been in a work environment often for several years. They are also concerned with how their CV will be perceived if they have career gaps, as well as other issues relating to childcare arrangements and flexible working.”

Abacare understands that working and looking after children can be difficult, so is offering flexible hours to potential new care staff who are returning to the workforce.

Neil added: “As well as providing continuous care to our service users, we also always make sure our staff are looked after, so as part of our returners’ programme, we’re offering the opportunity for people to take on weekend or evening work.

“Weekends and evenings are our busiest times and these hours could be ideal for parents too. Our hours can fit around their childcare, as we are able to be very flexible.”

Abacare operates a professional Care Management Team that is committed to providing high quality care to individuals in their own homes.

The large team of trained, specialist, care workers provide positive based outcomes and person-centred care to people throughout the UK.

Its core values, instilled into every staff member, include ‘make us proud’, ‘focus on our service users’ wellbeing’, ‘communicate, listen well and speak with respect’, ‘be passionate, honest, caring and considerate’, ‘recruit and develop the very best’ and ‘lead by example’.

It believes it offers inspiring work for inspirational people.

It is a member of the United Kingdom Homecare Association, Ceretas (formerly British Association of Domiciliary Care), The National Homecare Council and The Information Commissioners Office (Data Protection). It is also registered with the Care Social Services Inspectorate Wales.

Abacare is looking to hire new carers to provide care to its service users this year and is offering flexible and supported learning for those wishing to advance their careers.

Neil added: “We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for. No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is given.

“We provide free, full training on a fast-track basis to make sure everyone we take on is ready. This includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial three months probationary period.”

The Government has also taken steps to ensure a quicker turnaround on DBS checks, so people can get into work quicker.

“New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking for a change of career or someone who just fancies a bit of a change. Being a carer is an extremely rewarding job and you get to meet lots of wonderful people too.

“We’re supporting our colleagues in the NHS wholeheartedly, as we do on a daily basis already, by providing invaluable care for those who need it at home.

“By maintaining their health at home, we’re helping keep them safe. We’re ensuring they take their prescribed medication and we’re caring for their physical and emotional well-being every day. All this helps prevent adding additional pressure on the NHS and its resources, which we know will be under considerable strain in the coming months.”
