Great North Walk

Published: 18th April 2009 16:53
The Diabetes UK Great North Walk 2009 will feature a truly lovely 10-mile route in and around Herrington Country Park. The event will begin and end in the former colliery site and take in some of the adjoining area's finest countryside. Walkers will be able to get up close and personal with the iconic Penshaw Monument and wander the banks of the River Wear.
It all adds up to a totally unique event that is ideal for all the family. In fact, the Great North Walk is a great social occasion for the serious and not so serious walker and will encourage many hundreds to get their walking shoes on as part of a fitness drive.
What's more, the event is also a great opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause such as Diabetes UK.

The 2009 Diabetes UK Great North Walk will feature a different path from last year's event. Though the event will be centred on Herrington Country Park, the start and finish area will be in a different location to the one used in 2008.
It means walkers will experience a new opening loop around the former colliery site, which has been transformed into a wonderful country park with thousands of mature and specially planted trees. The route will then cross Chester Road, where improved traffic management arrangements will be in place, and head up to Penshaw Monument.
From the fantastic vantage point of Penshaw Monument and its sweeping views of both the lower Wear and Tyne valleys, the route descends to the south bank of the River Wear before turning left towards Fatfield and then back round to Penshaw. The final stretch will take walkers home to the delights of Herrington Country Park.

There is also a shorter route over about 3 miles, on a tarmac route wholly within Herrington Country Park, which is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs & smaller children.

Starts from 10.30am on Sunday 14 June 2009.
Entry Fees are £14 each for adults, and £8 for children ( before 1 May 2009 )
A Family Entry ( 2 adults 7 2 children ) costs £36
Entry Fee includes an event t-shirt & souvenir medal.
