Free expert tips on spotting signs of dementia

Published: 19th August 2020 14:50

EXPERTS at a Welsh care provider are offering advice to people on spotting the early signs of dementia as part of World Alzheimer’s Month next month (September 2020).

Carers at Abacare have undergone extensive dementia training and can recognise the symptoms of the condition and are sharing their knowledge with the general public to help raise awareness.

Neil Griffiths, Regional Manager at the award-winning Abacare, which provides care across Wales, said: “There are currently 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, according to the Alzheimer’s Society. This is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040. More than 209,600 people will develop dementia this year.

“Despite Coronavirus dominating everyone’s lives at the moment, it’s important to remember that other conditions, such as dementia, can still develop and its crucial that people stay vigilant and continue looking out for the early signs in their loved-ones.

“As part of World Alzheimer’s Month, we wanted to share our expertise, so people know what they should be looking out for. If anyone out there notices any of the below issues or changes in their loved-one over a period of time, they should seek medical advice:

  • Memory loss – some memory loss in our old age is normal, but if it starts to upset day-to-day living, this could be an early warning sign of dementia
  • Difficulty completing tasks that they have had no problems with previously – this can be at home or at work
  • Confusion about the time or where they are
  • Difficulty speaking or writing when otherwise they would normally not have any trouble
  • Putting down objects and forgetting where they have been placed
  • Withdrawing from work or social activities
  • Mood swings or changes in personality.

“As we have an ageing population, it’s so important to empower people with knowledge of conditions such as dementia. It’s also important to have them diagnosed early, so we hope our advice helps anyone out there who might already be noticing some of these signs, get help for themselves or a loved-one.

“Having a diagnosis of dementia doesn’t mean a person has to lose control of their life or independence. Many people continue to live fulfilled and happy lives for many years. We’re able to provide dementia care services and support and anyone interested or needing advice, should get in touch with us via our website at www.abacare.org.uk.”

World Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.

The campaign was launched in 2012. September 2020 will mark the ninth World Alzheimer's Month.

Two out of three people, globally, believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries.

Abacare operates a professional Care Management Team that is committed to providing high quality care to individuals in their own homes.

The large team of trained, specialist, care workers provide positive based outcomes and person-centred care to people throughout the UK.

Abacare’s core values, instilled into every staff member, include ‘make us proud’, ‘focus on our service users’ wellbeing’, ‘communicate, listen well and speak with respect’, ‘be passionate, honest, caring and considerate’, ‘recruit and develop the very best’ and ‘lead by example’.

It believes it offers inspiring work for inspirational people as well as a flexible and supported working environment.

Neil added: "Anyone who would like to educate themselves on dementia and look after people with the condition, can take on a career in care with us. Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start at the very bottom and work their way up with training and qualifications.

“We are looking for kind, honest, caring and reliable individuals who wish to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for. No experience is necessary to become a carer, as free, full training is given.

“We can provide our free, full training on a fast-track basis to make sure everyone we take on is ready. This includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial three months probationary period. The Government has also taken steps to ensure a quicker turnaround on DBS checks, so people can get into work quicker.

New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking for a change of career or someone who just fancies a bit of a change. Being a carer is an extremely rewarding job and you get to meet lots of wonderful people too.”
