London’s Finest Architecture: A Look At The Capital’s Most Intriguing Buildings

Published: 2nd April 2019 13:21
Think of London and we’ll associate many buildings with the UK capital. Building’s that are iconic in the city. They’ll feature on fridge magnets, in snow globes and in hundreds of Instagram photos every day.

Think of London and we’ll associate many buildings with the UK capital. Building’s that are iconic in the city. They’ll feature on fridge magnets, in snow globes and in hundreds of Instagram photos every day.

Of course, it can’t be denied that the likes of Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral are some of the finest pieces of architecture in the UK, but of course we all know that.

That’s why we’ve decided to look at some of the Big Smoke’s less well known stars of the street.

The Ritz

The Ritz is a true icon of London hotels having welcomed VIPs since 1906.

The Grade II listed building has welcomed all sorts of royalty over the years whether it be to their rooms or lavish casino.

Gambling has shown an overall increase in the UK over last ten years, with plenty learning how to play casino games before spending big on the roulette tables.

This is reflected in the increase of casino attendance across the country, as well as in the revenue of the different gambling sectors in the UK, which show a definite consistency of betting as the predominant revenue source.

The likes of the new deal or no deal casino are great places to start if you’ve never been to a casino before, after all, nobody wants to look out of place in the Ritz.

Wilton’s Music Hall

Wilton’s Music Hall is one of the last few remaining music hall’s in Britain and to this day keeps hold of many of its original features.

Hidden away down Graces Alley, just a stone’s throw from the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, the Music Hall still produces shows to this day, while you can also take in some food and drink at the glorious Mahogany Bar.

The Hall itself opened in 1859 and was a classic giant pub hall modelled on many of the other music halls of the day. It’s well worth a visit in what truly is an incredible step back in time.

Tate Modern

The Tate Modern is as much of a masterpiece as the work inside it. Taking over the old Bankside Power Station in 2000, it stands proudly on the south bank of the Thames.

It houses some of the world’s most famous pieces of work and is one of the largest museums of contemporary art on the planet.

The Power Station itself was built in 1891 and is famed for its large chimney and was in operation for 90 years before the £134million conversion to Tate.

The Black Friar Pub

You can’t beat a good, old fashioned London boozer and the Black Friar is certainly that.

Located by Blackfriars tube station, the Grade II listed building has been pouring pints since 1905 and almost didn’t make it beyond the 1960s when poet Sir John Betjeman saved it.

Built on the site of a medieval Dominican friary, you’ll find plenty of reference to that, not list the friar sculpture over the entrance to the pub.

Inside it’s a similar story, from the stain glass windows to the pieces of art on the walls.

It’s a real look into oldy worldly London and sure has plenty of stories to tell. It’s the ideal stop of point for those crossing back over the river from the South Bank, while it’s also just a short walk from St Paul’s and Smithfield Market.
