Forgotten Pastimes Are Back...And They’re Coming To Your Area

Published: 15th October 2019 17:13

As technology evolved and console games became more and more popular, to the point where Fortnite gamers are filling stadiums, it seemed gone were the days of the humble pastimes from yesteryear.

As technology evolved and console games became more and more popular, to the point where Fortnite gamers are filling stadiums, it seemed gone were the days of the humble pastimes from yesteryear.

However that appears not to be the case as a number are welcoming a revival, and a revival in style at that.

Up and down the country we’re welcoming brand spanking new darts bars, bingo nights and cricket has comfortably just enjoyed its best summer since 2005 in the UK.

Of course, technology is partly responsible for this. Live streaming and the ability to watch the likes of cricket on-the-go has contributed massively, while the number of online bingo sites now available to play at has also helped find a new found audience.

Bingo games like the ones you see at Robin Hood Bingo have become more interesting and varied than ever before, with speed games alongside the traditional, allowing people to essentially play anytime, anywhere via mobile.

Because of this, not only is the online game thriving, but it’s welcoming that new audience into bingo halls, alongside other interesting concepts too.

Bongo’s Bingo tours the country and sells out venues in dozens of cities, including the likes of London, Leeds, Manchester and even Lincoln, Hull and smaller UK cities, largely attracting younger, student audiences. As well as this, more traditional bingo halls are also welcoming this audience. And bingo isn’t the only more traditional pastime.

Darts has long been popular, selling out arenas for the Premier League, but you won’t find many city dwellers enjoying a leg on a Friday night with their friends.

That is beginning to change though. As trendy ten-pin bowlers continue to thrive, more and more bars are bringing the board games back out, hanging the dart boards and setting up the oche.

Flight Club has begun to pop up around the country, delivering a gentrified version of the sport and replacing the pint with the cocktail and chalkboard with automatic calculation systems and new variants of the game. And people are flocking to them.

That is only going to continue. A recent report by the BBC claimed people are shunning video games in favour of board games, with the more traditional forms of game returning.

But what’s next? Jenga bars? Indoor boules? Either way, there seems to be a market for the traditional pastime and they’re coming to a town near you.
