Fury Looks to Join Long List of Manchester’s Boxing World Champions

Published: 12th February 2020 16:23

On February 22 2020, Tyson Fury will be looking to make history.

The Wythenshawe man will become a two-time heavyweight champion of the world if he can overcome Deontay Wilder at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. It would also be the first time that Wilder has lost in his professional career.

The ‘Gypsy King’, as he is known, has had to overcome all manner of problems inside and out of the ring to get to this point, and he is ready for a shot at redemption after cruelly being denied victory the first time the pair met in December 2018.

Back then, the 31-year-old twice had to lift himself off of the canvas to meet the referee’s ten count and, after both knockdowns, most experts at ringside felt that Fury had done enough to secure the win.

Just over a year since, he will have another chance of re-joining the incredible list of boxing world champions that have hailed from the Manchester area. The bookmakers suggest he is the favourite to win the fight in their Wilder vs Fury odds, and so Fury has a great shot at joining Lancashire’s finest boxing stars.

Ricky Hatton

One of boxing’s most lovable characters, Ricky Hatton was an entertainer inside and outside of the ring.

Larger than life – literally, sometimes, given his notorious weight gains in-between fights, Hatton was a two-weight world champion that fought some of the best pound-for-pound fighters in history, including Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Some of his best nights in boxing came at the Manchester Arena, most notably his famous victory over Kostya Tszyu to win his first world title.

Anthony Crolla

Like Hatton, Anthony ‘Million Dolla’ Crolla was a gutsy technician who served up some of the finest nights that boxing fans from Manchester will recall.

While far from perfect from a technical standpoint, Crolla had incredible heart and punch resistance, and was able to take his opponents into some dark waters late on in fights.

It was a strategy that won him the WBA lightweight title against Darleys Perez at the MEN Arena, and earned similarly hard-fought victories against other brawlers like Ricky Burns.

Never one to duck a fight, Crolla even gave it a good go against Vasyl Lomachenko, arguably among the finest pound-for-pound boxers in the sport today.

Scott Quigg

A high-quality basher, Scott Quigg has won 26 of his 39 fights by way of knockout, and continues to be one of the most devastating featherweights on the planet.

His super-fight with Ireland’s Carl Frampton was one of the most highly-charged nights of boxing that Manchester has ever witnessed and, while he tasted defeat there, Quigg has come out on top numerous times at the city’s arena, including a stoppage win over the dangerous Kiko Martinez.

The loss to Frampton persuaded the Bury brawler to step up to featherweight, and he will collide with Jono Carroll at Manchester Arena on March 7.

Terry Flanagan

The first British fighter ever to win a world title in the lightweight category, Terry Flanagan is still active and going well.

He won the WBO lightweight strap at the Manchester Velodrome back in 2015, and followed up with five successful defences.

Flanagan stepped up to light-welterweight shortly after, and a couple of defeats left his career in the doldrums. But, in classic Mancunian spirit, he dusted himself off, started again and is now three unbeaten heading into 2020.

If Fury can take care of business against Wilder, he will make Manchester boxing fans proud once more.
