Five Great Ideas For A Day Out In Liverpool

Published: 13th February 2019 15:49

The history of the Royal Albert Dock is quite something. Not only was it the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, it was also the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.

Liverpool is one of the great iconic cities in the UK. Steeped in culture and history, it’s no surprise that it was named the European Capital of Culture in 2008. And while the city has grown in the years since then, there is no disputing that it really is a place that has something for everyone.

Liverpool One

An iconic shopping centre that attracts visitors from all over the UK, Liverpool One is the £920m retail development that stands on over 170,000 squared meters of prime space in the city.

It is the largest open-air shopping centre in the UK and is home to over 170 stores and services. And if you get tired of shopping ‘til you drop, then you can sit back, relax and catch a movie in one of the 14 cinema screens in the Odeon.

Royal Albert Dock

The history of the Royal Albert Dock is quite something. Not only was it the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, it was also the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.

Damage from the blitz during the Second World War, along with the decline in the docking industry led to the facility being closed in 1972. Thankfully it was re-opened in 1984 and has since gone one to be a major tourist attraction.

It is part of UNESCO’s designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City and is home to the largest single collection of Grade I listed buildings anywhere in the UK.

Aintree Racecourse

Home to the greatest horse race in the world, Aintree Racecourse is famous for hosting the Grand National. First run in 1839, the race is reportedly watched by over 600m people around the world.

A huge day out, there is an abundance of things to do on race day. So if you fancy getting all dressed up and having a great time with friends and family, you could do a whole lot worse than a day at the races.

Check out the Red Rum statue, the parade ring, grab something to eat, have a few drinks and enjoy the top entertainment that Aintree has to offer.

Liverpool Echo Arena

Still more commonly known as the Echo Arena, it recently underwent a name change and now goes by the title M&S Bank Arena. It is a phenomenal facility that has the capacity to hold 11,000 concert go-ers and since opening has attracted over 6m visitors to over 3,500 events.

There are plenty of places to grab a bit to eat or a post show drink and with a huge mix of entertainment scheduled all year around, it’s the perfect way to round off any day in Liverpool.

Anfield Stadium

You don’t have to be a fan of Liverpool FC to visit Anfield. In fact you may even opt to visit Goodison Park, home to Everton. But if you’re a sports fan this is one place you won’t want to miss.

Take a photo beside the famous Bill Shankly statue, tour the Kop and have a browse through the LFC Retail Store, which underwent a massive revamp in 2017.  And after all of that you can chill out in the Fan Zone fan zone", which has plenty of catering outlets and pre-match entertainment.
