Is Distance Learning A Good Option For Qualifying as a Teacher in the South West?

Published: 16th July 2019 21:29

If you are on the road to becoming a teacher but live in the South West of England, you may feel like the only options for taking your masters in education involve a long commute to one of the universities in the region or relocating altogether for the duration of your course. This will certainly add to the costs of taking your course, as well as disrupting your life considerably, and this can be an especially big concern if you have children or a job already.

Fortunately, a lot of UK universities offer the course you need as a 100% distance learning option. The University of Exeter, for example, has a highly respected teaching faculty and can offer a masters in education distance learning program where you don't need to visit the campus at all, though Exeter may still be close enough for you to go there and check out the university when you want to.

Is Online Study As Good As Going To Uni the Traditional Way?

Online degrees have come a long way since the old days of Open University and correspondence courses. You will now find there are no disadvantages for online students at all, with the same high-quality courses provided to remote students using online methods like video streaming of lectures and online messaging to talk to tutors and other students. Employers recognise that online degrees are now just as good as conventionally attained ones, and so you won't need to worry about the choice to study from home having a negative impact on you getting a job when you qualify.

Is It Harder to Study From Home?

Some people find online studying from home easier because they can choose when and where they study and can focus on the types of learning that they know work best for them. However, it does require some self-discipline to complete a course when nobody is there telling you where to be and at what times, so this is something you may need to work on for yourself if you are someone who struggles with self-motivation. When it comes to using the course materials, however, online study is not really any different to going to uni - you shouldn't find it any more difficult to do things like research or review course materials from home.

How Do I Get Started?

If you have decided that an online masters in education could suit you, then the first step is to compare the courses available, starting at a time that fits with your plans. Many online courses follow normal school terms, so you'll find plenty starting in September. You will find the costs and enrolment criteria on the websites for the courses and can also check out reviews from past students to see how well received a course and university have been.

Why not start researching courses available to you and think about beginning your MSE this year?
