High Street Bookies Vs Online Betting Websites

Published: 29th March 2019 11:25

It is no secret that the rise of online retail has deeply affected our high streets up and down the country. Unfortunately, this is largely not in a positive manner, either. This situation is perhaps particularly thought about when we think of shopping online compared to its bricks and mortar counterpart, but it is also something that has been affecting the humble street bookmakers too.

One of the reasons for this is to do with convenience. You can go into your local bookmakers to place a bet and have relevant information to help you place said bet. More times then not, there will be some helpful staff on hand if you need any assistance and to serve you. Many people like this experience. However, online betting sites not only have all the information you could need, such as instant access to viewing odds, a bet can be placed in seconds. It also can be completed from the comfort of your own home, public transport, or anywhere else where you have an internet connection.

Price could be another factor, tied in with special offers. Online betting sites more often than the physical betting shop, give more UK betting options and with that a higher range of attractive prices and promotions, such as sign up bonus' and email offers. You can pretty much always find some free bets here and there online, and whilst regular betting establishments do offer this, they can not offer it to the same extent and with the same easiness that the online sites offer.

Look at the logistics too. Many betting shops may not open on say a Sunday in the UK. But online it is a 24-hour deal, so people can make those midnight bets if they so, please. Not only that, once you have joined up your chosen payment method with your account you are good to go for any future visits. Plus, whereas in a betting shop, a building which is never usually huge, you normally only have one or two screens to view the action as you watch your bet, online of course you can have the exact sport open, and multi-task at the same time.

Then, if we look from the business perspective of the bookmakers themselves, it is far cheaper to run a betting site online then the costs involved with renting premises. This has resulted in some brands that were previously operating from a building to becoming an online-only betting service.

Now there will always be those who may select a betting shop because they like the atmosphere, and the chance to chat with their fellow betters. Online betting websites usually have chat options too, and some may be more than happy with that. Then you could look at other factors, what about bad weather keeping people in? At least they can bet from their laptop, phone or tablet right? In a world where we are said to have increasingly busy lives in general, it is not at all hard to see how people will pick online betting to more easily fit into their schedules.

Now, who knows exactly, but the tides could turn. I mean we can not pretend that gambling online is only going to become a small little dent in the future for the betting world, that would be incredibly naive. But, some people believe there is hope for the high street still, and in fact, I also think it would be naive to think otherwise.

There is a good chance that sometime in the not-too-distance future the high street will see a turnaround, and while it has a strong fight against a true juggernaut in the form of the WWW, there are some reasons why a bricks and mortar store will always exist for betting purposes, and indeed is able to offer elements that the online version can not. An example, of course, is that person to person customer service that is not the same as a virtual bot, or chat room conversation. And is the virtual atmosphere really the same as the real world buzz? If betting shops can convince and use their unique selling points to their advantage you can put a bet on a good chance of survival.
