Calls For Bank Holiday If England Win The World Cup

“It’s Coming Home,” has been the three words sweeping the nation over the last fortnight and should Labour, and the rest of the nation, get their way July 16 we could be all staying home after calls to declare a national holiday should England win the World Cup.
England reached the Quarter Final on Tuesday evening after a tense penalty shootout win against Colombia sealed their place in the last eight, and with a clear route to the final both Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry have championed the idea of a national holiday.
Gareth Southgate’s men will face Sweden on Saturday, before taking on either Russia or Croatia in the Semi Final, should they win. Memes, songs and general goodwill have swept the nation, with bookies now placing the Three Lions second favourite behind only Brazil according to http://www.betandskill.com.
England are guaranteed to avoid the likes of France, Belgium and Brazil all the way to the final and are hotly tipped, despite having not reached a World Cup Semi Final since 1990 and the final of a major tournament since that infamous afternoon at Wembley in 1966.
The significance of a feat not achieved for 52 years has therefore not gone unnoticed. A spokesperson for Jeremy Corbyn said, “We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but I think it is the case that Jeremy believes that if England were to win the World Cup there should be a public bank holiday in celebration.”
He added, “It's something that brings people together on a very large scale and we need recognition of that and recognition of the importance of football in the country.”
A petition has also been started on change.org which has already achieved over 1,000 signatures and is still rising. That will put significant pressure on a subject that will undoubtedly be discussed in parliament if England do get past Sweden.
Theresa May has so far been quiet on the possible outcome, instead commenting on the performances of the team and lending her backing. She admitted she was too nervous to watch the penalty shootout before promising to keep the St Georges cross flying high above 10 Downing Street for as long the country is in the tournament.
She will have to tackle head on the fact that the nation will be expecting a lie in on Monday July 17 though, should England lift the World Cup and spend the entire evening partying in the streets.
