September is Wellbeing month at Arundel Wetland Centre

Author: WWT Arundel Published: 12th September 2011 07:39

Now that the summer holidays are over and the children are back at school it’s a good time to relax and refocus your energy. September is Wellbeing month at the visitor centres of the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, an opportunity to reconnect with nature and with yourself. WWT Arundel Wetland Centre is hosting a series of taster sessions, talks and exhibits from wellbeing experts every Wednesday in September. Visitors can also explore the natural world and experience how it can enhance their life and maintain wellbeing from the pathways, boats and bird hides of this beautiful reserve.

On Sept 7 try a massage taster session and hear from an image consultant about how colour can enhance your look and your life. On Sept. 14 chat with Lynette from NHS oral health and learn about body control pilates at a demonstration and talk. On Sept. 21 the Wellbeing Advisor from Arun District Council is on hand with knowledge of what help, support and activities are available to people who want to make positives changes to improve their health. The instructors from Arundel Pilates are back on Sept 28th to wrap up the month.

It is increasingly accepted that spending time outdoors, surrounded by nature, is good for people’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Recent studies into the health benefits of nature and the outdoors have concluded that…

  • Spending time in the outdoors and in contact with the natural environment can have a positive effect on mental health[i]
  •   Contact with green spaces positively impacts blood pressure, cholesterol, outlook on life and stress-reduction[ii]
  •  Our quality of life, health and economic prosperity are crucially dependent on our natural world[iii]

Arundel Wetland Centre is the perfect place to relax and unwind. We also offer the perfect opportunity to discover something new. A photography workshop on Sept 24-25 with wildlife photographer David Plummer will open your eyes and your camera to the wildfowl of the world. See the stunning documentary “Winged Migration” being screened at Arundel Wetland Centre as part of the On Location film festival on the evening of Sept 23rd. The ticket price includes entry to the reserve, a 2-for-1 voucher for a return visit, and a free glass of wine.

Time spent together with your family is important in creating a sense of wellbeing. Waterfest weekend on Sept 17 & 18 is an event the whole family can enjoy together. On Saturday the street performers of the Lady Lydia entertain with four shows a day while on Sunday Professor H2O will wow you with water at two shows at 11:30 and 2:30. The family can ride a mini-steam train, watch model boats sail on Swan Lake and see demonstrations by the British Marine Rescue divers and the Sussex Mills Society. With pond dipping and boat rides too - there is so much to do this waterful weekend. Don’t miss it!
